ONLINE, WE CAN ENLARGE THE IMAGES OF FOOD THAT WE FIND AND LINGER AS LONG

AS WE WANT”-THERESA O’BOURKE

WHAT HAS HAPPENED?

“Before, they used to take photos of their family, of their grandmothers and

grandfathers…

But now, it is photos of dishes” Quoted by:

Chef Alexandre Gauthier

Cuisine that is creatively photogenic is meant to be eaten, not bastardized by a badly lit photo

Food is becoming central in our minds because of the influence of social media

“I see clients for whom food has become very problematic. They struggle to go out and not have food be the key element

of all social interaction”

– Psychologist Valerie Taylor

BYU  Professors  Ryan  Elder  and  Jeff  Larson  recruited  232  people  to  rate  pictures  of  food

At the end of the rating period, all the participants were fed peanuts....

People who observed the salty foods the whole time were not so excited by the

peanuts, even though the specific food never appeared in any of their salty food photos

Results showed that the salty foods made the specific participants all “salted out”- satiated on the experience of saltiness without orally consuming any salt

WHY DO PEOPLE POST FOOD PORN?

1. Some people post it to show that they are eating healthy and mindfully

We all know that a picture is worth 1000 words...but

will Food Porn replace the 1000 splendid tastes of food?

Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are
