Will you choose to stand against deception?

Lay  out  a  long  piece  of  roll  paper.  Provide  old  magazines  and  newspapers,  scissors,  and  glue.  Tell  preteens  to  find  ads  and  stories  that  seem  to  be  deceptive.  They  should  cut  them  out  and  glue  to  the  paper.  After  several  minutes,  let  preteens  explain  what  they  felt  was  deceiving  about  the  ads  and  stories  they  found.  When  finished,  SAY:  Let’s  dig  into  God’s  Word  to  see  what  it  says  about  deception.

On  Tuesday,  Americans  will  cast  ballots  to  elect  a  new  president.  Political  organizations  and  supporters  have  spent  more  than  $11  billion  on  advertising  to  convince  people  to  choose  their  candidate  over  other  candidates.  Unfortunately,  some  ads  are  carefully  designed  to  deceive  voters  into  believing  something  about  a  candidate  that  isn’t  true.  Unfortunately,  there  is  no  law  against  telling  lies  in  political  advertising—which  means  that  some  candidates  say  whatever  they  want  to  help  them  get  elected—and  get  away  with  it.  But  a  number  of  fact-­checking  websites,  such  as  like  PolitiFact,  FactCheck,  and  iCheck,  examine  what  candidates  say  and  report  whether  what  was  said  is  the  truth  or  is  deception.
