IDENTIFY four common classes of fires

SELECT the proper type of extinguisher

EVALUATE when it is safe to fight an “early-stage” fire

APPLY the PASS method to operate a portable extinguisher.

Don’t know about the proper type of extinguisher

Don’t know how to make a “Fight or Flight” analysis

Unfamiliar with the PASS fire extinguisheroperation method

Oxygen◦ sustains burning

Heat◦ raises material to

its ignition temp

◦ ignition source

Fuel◦ must be something

to burn

Fire extinguishers are classified by

the types of fires on which they may

be used.

Class A fires ONLY Filled with high pressure

water Typically in silver canister Cools fuel / removes heat

in fire triangle

Water Extinguishers

Very clean / little mess

Gas is very COLD when expelled

Displaces oxygen and/or cools in fire triangle

Carbon Dioxide ExtinguisherCarbon Dioxide Extinguisher

Forms a blanket over the

fuel.

Displaces oxygen in the

fire triangle.

Foam Extinguisher

Filled with fine powder

Makes a BIG mess

Absorbs heat

Cuts off oxygen

Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher

Remove persons in immediate danger

Ensure doors are closed (confine fire / smoke)

Activate the building alarm system

Call the Fire Department if past the incipient stage.

Treat ALL fires as DANGEROUS

How To Use a Fire Extinguisher

1. Check the gauge• The pressure indicator should be in the

green zone. (CO2 extinguishers do not

have pressure gauges)

2. The extinguisher should have a

current inspection tag

3. The pin and handle should be

secured with a plastic tab seal

4. The extinguisher and hose should be

free of any visible damage

LOW at the base of the fire

from side to side

from side to side

Watch the fire area

◦ if the fire flares up again repeat

◦ if you can’t control the fire, leave immediately

Recharge or replace any used fire extinguisher.

Bring empty fire extinguisher to pump room and

replace with a full one.

1. Extinguishers are in their assigned place.

2. Extinguishers are not blocked or hidden.

3. Operating instructions are legible.

4. Pressure gauges show adequate pressure - CO2 extinguishers must be weighed or hefted to determine if leakage has occurred.

5. Pin and seals are not broken and in place.

6. Fire extinguishers show no visual sign of damage, corrosion, leakage or clogged nozzle.

Readily visible at all times.

If visual obstruction cannot be avoided, include

additional signage, lights, or arrows.

An extinguisher on a wall that is visible from

most of the space would be considered

unobstructed.

Never fight a fire if you don't know

what is burning

If you don't know what is burning, you don't

know what type of extinguisher to use.

Even if you have an ABC extinguisher, there

may be something in the fire which is going to

explode or produce highly toxic smoke.

Never fight a fire if the fire is spreading

rapidly beyond the spot where it started

The time to use an extinguisher is in the

incipient, or beginning, stages of a fire.

If the fire is already spreading quickly, it is

best to simply evacuate the building,

closing doors and windows behind you as you leave.

Never fight a fire if you do not

have appropriate equipment

If you don't have the correct type or large

enough extinguisher, it is best not to try to

fight the fire.

Never fight a fire if you might inhale toxic

smoke

If the fire is producing large amounts of

smoke that you would have to breathe in

order to fight it, it is best not to try.

Gases from man made materials can be fatal

in very small amounts.

Never fight a fire if your instincts tell you not to

If you are uncomfortable with the situation for

any reason, just let the fire department do their

job.

Always position yourself with an exit or means

of escape at your back before you attempt to

use an extinguisher to put out a fire

In case the extinguisher malfunctions, or

something unexpected happens, you need to be

able to get out quickly, and you don't want to

become trapped.

Always keep an exit at your back.
