Dear Incoming First Grade Parents,

Congratulations on completing a wonderful year in kindergarten! We are so excited that your child will be joining us in the first grade! It is our hope that the summer packet will be a great place to start practicing routines and implementing expectations for the first grade.

Please assist your child by supporting them while they complete the summer packet. The attached work should be completed over the summer and returned to your child’s teacher no later than the first Friday of the first week of school to receive credit.

We look forward to a productive and enjoyable school year. Thank you in advance for entrusting us with one of your most precious gifts.

Have a wonderful summer,

The First Grade Team

Summer Reading

Summer is a great time to nurture your child’s love for reading. Children like to discover reading by visiting their local library, participating in a summer reading club, and enjoying family reading time. Students entering first grade are required to read assigned books during the summer months. Please complete and return the Reading Log to your teacher on the first day of school.

Each book is designed to be a read aloud book that parents can read with or to your child. We recommend reading 15 minutes each day to develop reading fluency and comprehension skills. Please record your reading minutes on the attached reading log. Here are a few suggestions to make the summer reading pleasurable and adventurous.

• Select a special time (before bedtime, after dinner, etc.). • Select a special place. • Assist your child with unfamiliar words. Do not allow your child to become

frustrated with reading. • Model reading with expression, excitement and emotion. • Ask questions as you read to check for comprehension.

Daily drills are an integral part of our daily routine in the Grammar School. Before reading a book each day, your child should practice reading 15-20 words from the Word Reading Lists. We encourage you to practice with your child daily. Remember, say-spell-say every word in a fun way, any given day.

Required Reading for 1st Grade

*You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You Very Short Fairy Tales (Shared Reading)

-Mary Anne Hoberman

*Little Bear (Shared Reading)

-Else Holmelund Minarik

*In addition to the required summer reading, students are encouraged to participate in a summer reading program through their local library. Students must record their reading on the attached summer reading log. Assigned reading and summer logs are due the first week of school.

Please note: Books are available through your local library or local bookstore.

If an assignment is not submitted on time, students are responsible for submitting the late or missing assignment(s) within 3 (three) school days. Five (5) points will be deducted per school day and will result in a zero on the fourth (4th) day.

Have fun and enjoy your summer reading!

Summer Math

Please complete and return the summer math packet to your child’s teacher no later than the first Friday of the first week of school to receive credit. In addition, here are a few concepts to review over the summer to better prepare your child for first grade:

• Review identifying and counting money • Telling time • Identifying numbers up to 100 • Counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s • Add and subtract numbers from 1 to 10. Can write 2 + 5 = 7 and 7 – 2 =5. • Stating Home Phone Number • Identify tools that tell time. Clocks measure hours and minutes, calendars

measures days, weeks, and months. • Identify, sort and classify objects. Sort items by color, size, shape, etc. • Identify daily landmark times to the nearest hour. Example: breakfast is 8

o’clock in the morning, lunchtime is 12 o’clock, and bedtime is 8 o’clock in the evening.

• Compare two or more objects by length or weight. Which is shorter, longer, taller, smaller, lighter, or heavier?

Provided below are different math questions for your child to work on during the summer. Please print the packet. While completing each problem, please show your work and write your answers for each question. If you need more space to show your work, please use lined paper. Please be sure the extra paper is attached to the packet. Please note: If an assignment is not submitted on time, students are responsible for submitting the late or missing assignment(s) within 3 (three) school days. Five (5) points will be deducted per school day and will result in a zero on the fourth (4th) day.
