Charles Schulz has managed to
amuse and bridge generations
with his characters, Charlie
Brown, Lucy, Linus, Pig Pen, and
company. With their own special
brand of charm, they often pro-
voke laughter and pause for
thought, as Lucy constantly doles
out unsolicited advice. You may
remember the episode when
Charlie Brown seeks psychiatric
advice from Lucy. Lucy tells Char-
lie Brown that life is like a deck
chair on the cruise ship of life.
What you have to decide, Lucy
says, is whether you want your
deck chair to face backward so
you can see where you have
been, or if you want your deck
chair to face forward so you can
see where you are going. Exas-
perated, Charlie Brown responds,
―I’m having trouble just getting
my deck chair unfolded!‖
We are a blessed congregation
with many of our leaders facing
forward. As we journey together
it’s important that we continue to
dream and to vision. When we
make decisions based only on our
past experiences we limit God to
what we know. But God in all
God’s abundance offers us so
much more. The only way to
open ourselves to all that God
offers is to imagine a future that
is beyond anything we’ve ever
experienced.
This week, give some thought to
what you see ahead. Try to de-
scribe one or two things you
would like to see happen in our
church, which contributes to ful-
filling our God-given mission. I
am eager to see how God is

speaking through our hearts,
as we express and share our
hopes and visions for the fu-
ture.
Use the Heart Card on page 9
to write down these things
and bring it with you on Sunday,
Nov. 11. Think bigger than you
ever have before. Your card will
be added to an inspiring display
in the church. We will have addi-
tional blank Heart Cards availa-
ble in worship. What are your
hopes and visions for our
church?
―I, the Lord, reveal myself to
them in visions; I speak to them
in dreams.‖ (Numbers 12:6b,
NRSV)
I spent the last weekend in
September attending a gather-
ing for the Love INC (In the
Name of Christ) organization.
Love INC is a national organi-
zation that has become inter-
national in the last few years
with their new affiliates in Ken-
ya. Love INC is a clearinghouse
that unites the churches in a
community to better serve the
people in need. It allows for
churches to be better stewards
of the money God has given
them charge over.
After an affiliate is started, the
churches would refer their re-
quests for benevolence to Love
INC. A volunteer at Love INC
would do an intake, gathering
as much information as possi-
ble including references, to
check the legitimacy of the re-
quest. When they find the re-
quest to be legitimate, the vol-
unteer would ask a church if
they could fulfill the need.
Then, the volunteer would
send the request to the church.
After the need is met, a follow
up call is made to make sure that
the need was met, and the volun-
teer would continue the rela-
tionship to offer spiritual sup-
port.
As the affiliate matures, many
other programs could possibly
be developed starting with gap
ministry. As volunteers take in-
formation, they would start to
see needs in a community that
are not being met. For every
community, these needs are dif-
ferent. Love INC would ap-
proach a church to see if they
could start a ministry to fill the
gap of a particular need. For ex-
ample, the volunteers may hear
over and over that people need
diapers. There may be no place
in town that offers help with dia-
pers, so Love INC would ask a
church if they would like to start
diaper ministry.
Transitional ministry is also de-
veloped after time. This ministry
focuses on transforming lives
by offering classes that help im-
prove lives. Classes that would
help with resume building, in-
terviewing or household budg-
eting to name a few.
Love INC looks at giving differ-
ently than the traditional way
of giving. Instead of a ―hand-
out,‖ they give a ―hand-up.‖
They look at the assets of the
people requesting benevolence
instead of the needs. They
strategize with the requestor
to see if they have ways that
they can meet their own need.
Love INC has been around for
more that 30 years. In those 30
years, over 150 affiliates have
been developed uniting over
9,000 churches and over 7,000
community-based organiza-
tions. Over 300,000 volunteers
have served to help over one
million people in need.
As I see the increase of re-
quests for benevolence, I see
Benevolence Blessings by Heather McPhearson
the need for Rochelle and the
surrounding communities to
develop a Love INC. Working
for one church and attending
another, I had a strong desire
that the churches of our com-
munity need to unite. I knew
there was a better way to give.
Through this experience, God
confirmed for me that Love INC
is a way to do both, I ask for
your prayers as I head forward
to unite the churches of Ro-
chelle to start developing a Love
INC for Rochelle. If you
would like for information or
feel lead to help in this task,
please visit me (Heather :) in
the office.

Give Away Sunday, November 4th
Join us on Sunday, November 4th as we bake, decorate and deliver Pump-kin sugar cookies to people in and around the church. We will start the process at 2:00 and hopefully be done delivering them around 5:30.
CROP Walk
On September 30th we had 13 youth and 4 adults from our church join us in supporting the local CROP hunger walk. As a small group we raised over $1,526.00 together. We had 89 walkers from all around the community participate in the walk and help raise a total of $4,064.76 to help those who are hungry in our community and around the world. 25% of the total amount raised will go to help the Rochelle Christian Food Pantry, the Ashton Food Pan-try and the Rochelle Summer Lunch Program. The rest will go toward helping fight global hunger through Church World Service. Thank you to all who helped sup-port us in this year’s CROP Hunger walk.
PACK Raking Leaves
Sunday, Nov. 11th On this day we will be doing our Planned Act of Christian Kindness by raking leaves for families in the area. Bring your rake and join us in helping our neighbors right after Sunday School at 11:30am. Lunch will be provided before we begin. Remember to bring your rake and change of clothes to church on that day.
Come join us on Saturday nights as we Worship,
connecting our lives to God as well as to each other.
The message will be given by Pastor Paul Rasmus-
sen. Pastor Paul is a fourth generation Methodist
Pastor. He is in his 11th year of Pastoral work.
After coming to a Connection service our hope is
that you will have felt authentically welcomed and
will have been inspired to have a more meaningful
relationship with God. We hope to see you there!
