Service of Worship
January 21, 2018 at 11:00 am Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.
Please join us in wearing a name tag so that we might greet you.
Our ushers have hearing devices, large print editions of the bulletin,
activity bags for children staying in worship, and directions to our
nursery for babies and young children.
Centering Words The light God shines forth in Jesus Christ changes everything. The world as we know
it is passing away and becoming something gloriously new. In Jesus Christ, God’s
kingdom is coming…and is already here. This is good news indeed.
Welcome

Greeting Our God with Joy
Call to Worship Seth Ungemach
Leader: Jesus says, “Now is the time!”
People: Startle us, God, from our busyness and routines. Show us how
very close your Kingdom is.
Leader: Jesus says, “God’s kingdom is at hand.”
People: Deliver us, God, from faith in our own strength. Free us from
traps of violence, dishonesty, and greed.
Leader: Jesus says, “Receive the good news from God!”
People: Embolden us, God, to trust you anew and draw our strength
from your mercy and compassion.
Leader: Let us worship God!

Renewing Our Relationship with God
Prayer of Confession Shannon Headen
God, we know that you alone are unshakable. You alone are our
stronghold and our refuge. Yet, we fail to love and glorify you. We
live as if we can save ourselves, as if we can be our own stronghold
and fortress against the storm. And so, we confess our failings to
you and to one another, trusting in your forgiveness and your grace.
Amen.

Scripture Lessons
Jonah 3: 1-5, 10
The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Get up, go to
Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’So
Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD.
Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk
across.Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried
out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ And the people
of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and
small, put on sackcloth.
All sing first time. Second time: low voices, begin;
high voices enter two measures later; children and
youth enter two measures after that.
5
When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God
changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring
upon them; and he did not do it.
Psalm 62: 5-12, read responsively
Leader: 5For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.
People: 6He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be
shaken.
Leader: 7On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my
refuge is in God.
People: 8Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before
him; God is a refuge for us.
Leader: 9Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a
delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter
than a breath.
People: 10Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on
robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
Leader: 11Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power
belongs to God,
People: 12and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord. For you repay to all
according to their work.
Mark 1: 14-20
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the
good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of
God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother
Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And Jesus
said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And
immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little
farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in
6
their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left
their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
Leader: Hear what the Holy Spirit is telling God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.

THIS WEEK
Bible Study: The lessons for this week are: Deuteronomy 18: 15-20,
Psalm 111, 1 Corinthians 8: 1-13, and Mark 1: 21-28.
Bible and Bagels discusses next Sunday’s text(s) on Wednesday
mornings from 7:30 to 8:30. All are welcome!
The Ministry of Justice and Mission invites you to the theater: How do
we tackle poverty in America? In our community? Over the course of 90
minutes, audiences listen, explore, and ultimately decide how to spend
$1,000 cash from that evening’s box office sales. An experiment in
dialogue, collective decision-making, shared responsibility and the
potential for art to transform our world, How to End Poverty in 90
Minutes (with 119 people you may or may not know) is spectacularly
eclectic in form, often delightful and occasionally uncomfortable.
You are invited to join the Justice & Mission ministry for this play
on Saturday, January 27 at 7:30 pm at Cleveland Public Theater in Gordon
Square. Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased
at http://www.cptonline.org. Purchase tickets soon as they may sell out!
For those interested, we will meet at FHC at 5:00 pm to carpool and go out
for dinner before the show. RSVP by emailing jm@fhcpresb.org .

NEXT SUNDAY
Adult Education, 9:30 in South Hall
Our study centers on the wisdom text of Ecclesiastes, with added attention
to other wisdom sources. It’s a change of pace, and will call on our mature
and candid examination of this unusual book. This may very well be the
most interesting and challenging book we have studied. Please join us in
South Hall at 9:30 every Sunday.
Attention members: Please plan to attend the Annual Meeting of the
Congregation on Sunday, January 28 immediately after worship. All are
welcome; active members may vote. Lunch will be served and childcare
will be provided.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Group (60s-70s): You are invited to join The Group for their Super
Bowl Party on February 4 at the home of Hal and Pat Musick. See the
February TOWER for details.
