Forth-year University of Regina student Sarah Bultitude ispreparing to enter the workforce. What sets her apart? Shehas a professional mentor.

Bultitude, who is working toward an undergraduate degree inbusiness administration, is a participant in the newly-launchedHill Mentor program. The program provides the opportunityfor approximately 40Paul J.Hill School ofBusiness students tobe matched with mentors from the local business communityincluding for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, crown corporations, and government departments.

“There is so much to learn from a professional mentor,” saysBultitude. A mentor can offer advice, review your resume, help you prepare for interviews and provide you withinvaluable, honest feedback on how to improve. To know thatyour mentor was once in the same position you were in andnow they are a successful professional is reassuring.”

Heidi Eger, program advisor at the Paul J. Hill School ofBusiness agrees.

“In developing the Hill Mentor program, we determined thatstudents can benefit from a mentor who offers three streamsof learning: advice, networking opportunities and experientiallearning,” says Eger.

She explains that mentors offer guidance and advice byserving as a sounding board for student questions and offernetworking opportunities through which students can learnabout an industry or explore potential career paths. As well, says Eger, mentors offer students experiential learningopportunities by sharing their wealth ofexperience and providing insight intoindustry trends.

“We work with both students andmentors to ensure the experience isvaluable and meaningful,” says Eger.

In addition to her involvementin the mentorship program, Bultitudealso participated in a co-operativeeducation work placement whereshe discovered her passion forhuman resources.

“Both the co-operativeeducation experience andworking with a mentor areopportunities to network andbuild relationships outside ofthe classroom. Theseexperiences help studentstransition to post-schoolprofessionals,” says Bultitude.

Hill Mentor programparticipants are expectedto meet with their mentorson a monthly basis.
