Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions

A mixed number is a number with a whole number part and a fraction part.

6 2/3

An improper fraction is a fraction with a numerator that is greater than the denominator.

9/4

How to change a mixed number to an improper fraction.

4 ¼First, multiply the denominator by the whole

number 4 X 4 = 16

Then, add the numerator 16 + 1 = 17

Lastly, use the “17” as the numerator and keep the “4” as the denominator.

17 / 4

How to change an improper fraction to a mixed number.

9 / 4

Take the denominator and divide it into the numerator.

9 divided by 4 = 2 but you have 1 left over.

2 becomes the whole number, 1 will be the numerator, and keep 4 as the denominator.

2 ¼

Do NowOn your white boards, write down 2 proper fractions,

write 2 fractions you must simplify, 2 mixed numbers you must change to improper fractions, and 2 improper fractions you must change to mixed numbers.

2/3 and 5/72/4 = ½ and 6/10 = 3/5

3 4/5 = 19/5 and 2 2/3 = 8/3

20/7 = 2 6/7 and 13/4 = 3 1/4

Decimals

A decimal is a number that has at least one place to the right of the decimal point.

Equivalent

Having the same value.

Fractions and decimals can be equivalent.

¼ = 0.25

½ = 0.50

¾ = 0.75

4/4 = 1

Converting decimals and fractions

its simplest form.

Let’s practice! Use your calculator to convert these fractions

and decimals. Write the answer on your white board and hold it up.

5/6 5.75 9/12

4 4/8 3.12

4.5666666 = 4.56

32.34343434 = 32.34

Do Now

On your white boards, write down 5 repeating decimals (the long version and the short version).

Percents

A percent is the ratio of a number to 100.

A ratio is a comparison of two numbers using division.

Percents

When you are given a decimal:

0.65

move the decimal point 2 places to the right in order to change it to a percent.

0.65 = 65%
