Frida Kahlo Style Self-Portraits

Week 1 & 2

Learning IntentionWe are exploring the artwork of Frida Kahlo and experimenting with different techniques to express her style in our own self-portrait.

Success CriteriaI can use similar art techniques to Frida Kahlo when creating a self-portrait.

Materials● White A4 piece of paper● Greylead pencil● Coloured pencils● Textas● Ruler

Frida KahloFrida Kahlo’s artworks were about her life, dreams and fears. She loved using bright vibrant colours of her country and liked to add pets and decorative frames to her paintings. Frida Kahlo would tend to exaggerate her facial features (for example, give herself a monobrow or a little dark mustache above her upper lip).

BrainstormThink about the following questions:

● What do you notice about these self-portraits?

● What has Frida Kahlo included in her backgrounds?

● What techniques or ideas could you use from her artwork to include in your self-portrait?

How to draw a face

Example of Frida Kahlo inspired self-portraits

Outline of Task1. Draw a picture of yourself in the

middle of the page.

Consider whether you would like to have a border, then draw that part first. Stick to just drawing yourself from your shoulders up.

2. Include all of your facial features; eyes, ears, mouth, nose, eyebrows and hair.

Think about about how you could use Frida Kahlo's self-portraits as inspirations, could you exaggerate some of your facial features?

3. Then add detail to your background OR to your border. You have to do at least one of these.

Look at the details in the border Frida Kahlo has created around her portrait. What patterns and pictures could you add to yours?

Think about whether you would like to include any pets or favourite animals in your picture like Frida Kahlo does.

Look at the backgrounds of Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits. What type of plants are native to Australia that you could include in your picture?

4. To finish colour in your portrait with coloured pencils or textas.

Outline of Task Continued...5. Take a photo of your artwork and upload it to your computer. Then go back to the

visual arts google classroom and insert the photo to your google doc.6. Then write your answers to the reflection questions in the week 1 and 2 section.

*If you are unable to upload the photo and find the reflection questions, write your answers on a piece of paper and keep it in a folder with your artwork and you can hand that into me at a later date.

Reflection1. Which part of the activity was the most enjoyable?2. What did you find challenging in this activity and why?3. Is there anything you would do differently next time?
