VIBRANT TIMBER CITIES Cities are trying to address population growthand urban expansion, while at the same timereducing their carbon footprint. Annie Perkins,SFI’s Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships,appears in a video from the U.S. GreenBuilding Council (USGBC) about how bringingwood and nature into vibrant timber cities is apowerful way to reduce the carbon footprint of cities. Vibrant timber cities also helpsupport sustainable rural economies that harvest timber from well-managed forests. Thevideo is part of USGBC’s Living Standard campaign, which focuses on the power ofstorytelling to encourage sustainable actions.

EARNING LEED POINTS WITH CERTIFIEDWOOD SFI shares tips on how to how to earn Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design (LEED) points with certified wood inthis U.S. Green Building Council article by Annie Perkins, SFI’sSenior Director of Strategic Partnerships. Perkins outlines how anAlternative Compliance Path (ACP) allows LEED projects toachieve an existing green building credit.

THE GREEN RIDE FOR GREEN JOBS CYCLES ACROSSALBERTA AND INTO SASKATCHEWAN Since leaving Victoria, BC on May 13, Zac Wagman, PLT Canada’s Green Jobs Manager,has cycled more than 3,000 km/1,800 miles, on a wooden bicycle from Montreal’s PicoloVélo. It’s part of his 8,750 km/5,400 milefour-month ride to St. John’s, Newfoundland.Along the way, Zac is visiting 50 PLT Canada Green Jobs employers. He is also profilingyouth working in green jobs and sharing their experiences on social media to highlight thetypes of careers that exist in the forest, conservation and parks sectors. Edmonton welcomed Zac as he rolled across Alberta.A midday event at the AlbertaLegislature featured 20 youth, program partners, drop-in visits from members of the publicand two bike enthusiasts with the Edmonton Police Service. (Read stories from CTV andthe St. Albert Gazette.) The Green Ride took a detour to Whitecourt Alberta. Zacmet post-secondary studentsworking for the summer in Millar Western’s woodlands, pulp and lumber operations. Zacalso visited the Huestis Demonstration Forest, met over lunch with community leaders,school officials and Millar Western staff, then toured the company’s pulp mill and sawmill. SFI CONSERVATION IMPACT WEBINAR: LINKING SFICERTIFICATION AND CLIMATE SMART FORESTRY Join us June 27, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT for a webinar exploring a qualitative assessmentthat links certification to SFI with carbon management and climate benefits. The project isbeing led by Michigan State University's Forest Carbon and Climate Program (MSUFCCP) in partnership with the Michigan SFI Implementation Committee. MSU FCCPresearch has established direct links between SFI standards and "Climate SmartForestry" —practices that help mitigate the impacts of climate change, both throughcarbon sequestration and forest health. This project is supported by an SFI ConservationGrant and is part of SFI's Conservation Impact initiative, which measures andcommunicates conservation outcomes relative to biodiversity, carbon and climateresiliency, and water across the SFI footprint.

UPCOMING REVISION TO SFI STANDARDS In September 2019, SFI will be sending out a request for SFI Standard Revision TaskGroup nominations. Each task group will focus on the revision of the SFI ForestManagement, SFI Fiber Sourcing or SFI Chain-of-Custody and Labeling Standards.Interested in participating? SFI AND PLT WILL BE AT THEWORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE SFI and Project Learning Tree (PLT) will be at the 24thWorld Scout Jamboree July 22 – August 2 at theSummit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. PLT is aninitiative of SFI. In 2016, about 13,000 acres of forestat the Summit were certified to the SFI ForestManagement Standard. Overall, more than 100,000acres/40,000 hectares of Boy Scouts of America landis certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard.Tens of thousands of Scouts from around the world,ages 14 to 17, will attend the jamboree and SFI andPLT will be there to run environmental educationactivities each day. PLT activities are linked to eightCub Scout Adventures and six Scout merit badges.
