G322 TV DRAMAIDENTIFICATION AND ANALYSIS OF EDITING

WHAT IS EDITING

•Editing refers to how shots are put together into sequences to make up a media text.

THREE AREAS

•When analysing editing you must break it down into three areas to help the quality of the analysis.

•TRANSITIONS•CONTINUITY•SHOT DURATION

TRANSITONS

•Editing transitions are the different ways shots are linked together in the editing process. It describes how one shot moves into the next.

•Different transitions can create slightly different meanings for audiences.

TRANSITIONS•Dissolve or mixThis is when two shots are on screen at the

same time, visible through each other. The first shot is faded out while the second is faded in.

•Fade down (of sound)Gradual diminution of sound level

•Fade in (of pictures)Gradual appearance of the image.

TRANSITIONS

•Jump Cut A cut between two shots of the same

object, character or scene where the angle of the camera is less than 45 degrees

•Fade to blackGradual disappearance of image into black

screen

SHOT DURATION

•The duration of a shot will usually reflect the narrative context.

•Short shot duration-conveys urgency•Long shot duration-conveys detail and

intimacy with narrative

CONTINUITY•Cross cutting Also known as parallel editing. Alternation

between two or more different scenes which are (usually) developed simultaneously

CONTINUITY• Sound bridgePlaying the same soundtrack over two or more

shots is sometimes used to aid continuity. Sometimes a cut may coincide with a particular sound and then a similar sound occurs in the next shot.

• Eyeline MatchA common convention to maintain continuity,

a character looks at something and in the next shot we see what they are looking at
