AN IMPORTANT MATTER
Under date of July 23rd the Jack-
sonville Board of Trade addressed thefollowing letter to the mayors of alltowns boards of county commission-
ers and to every commercial organi-
zation in Florida regarding the raisingof funds for the presentation of asilver service to the battleship Flor-
idaDear Sir At the last session of
the Legislature the bill introduced toappropriate 5000 towards the purchase of a silver service for the bat-tleship Florida failed of passage andIt now behooves us to get to workand collect same by public subscrip-
tionThis Doard of Trade having taken
the initiative in this matter nowthat we collect from 17000 to
10000 by general subscription fromau over the State We think it is avery great compllmeat that the larg-
est battleship In the American navyIB named after our State and Itshould be fittingly recognized by haveing a handsome silver service onwhich could be traced the beautifulhistory of Florida from Its early dis-covery and Bettlemeat
When the amount Is collected Itis proposed to have the Governor appoint a representative committee tolook after the details as well as topresent the service In the spring of1911
MVe respectfully urge upon youthe great importance of this matterud ask for your hearty cooperationby starting subscription lists in yourcommunity at once Make remit-tance to the Jacksonville Doard ofTrade which will act as custodian-of tho funds and make acknowledgemont through the press and If asufficient amount cannot be collectedthen amounts la hand will be re-
turned to subscribers but we mustnot at the start acknowledge such aword as failure
This Is an important matter andGainesville and Alachua countyshould contribute liberally towards thepurchase of the service It is thecustom of every State to presentsuch a service to the battleship
after the commonwealth and cer-
tainly our own State will not be theonly one to fall to show Its appre-ciation of this recognition on the partof the National Government It Isto bo regretted that the Legislaturefailed to make an appropriation forthe purchase of this service butsuch is the case and it now behoovesthe people of Florida to do as indi-
viduals what a negligent Legislaturefailed to do for them If MayorDavis will open a subscription listfor the purchase of this silver serv-
ice The Sun will aid him In everyway possible
The Birmingham News says Atall events things are shaping them-selves for the most favorable busi-
ness conditions and the tide turnedsome time ago In the right dlrcctltraThe fall holds out rosy promises lunearly all lines of business Thereis every Indication that the comingyear will be the best In tho historyof the country
How about a State Baseball Leaguenext season Such a league composed of Jacksonville Gainesville Pa-
l tka Sanford Orlando Ocala Tampa and other towns should prove
financially Severalpeople in Jacksonville are already in-
teresting themselves In the organizalion of such a league
The prohibitionists who exacted apledge from Hon Joseph M Brownprior to his election as Governor andthen wanted to release him from itin connection with their brand newprohibition bill seem to have beentrying to play the game of heads I

Following the excellent example setby the Secretary of Commerce andLabor the Secretary of the Treasury-has now set about overhauling thepersonnel of his department with theexpressed determination of getting ridof all of the dead wood SecretaryMacVeagh says he Is satisfied thatthere are too many employes In thedepartment that a great many ofthem are useless to the public servicewhile others are actually a drag uponthe transaction of business The probabilities are that when tho shaking uphas been completed several hundredemployee will have to go And thatIs why there Is so much unrest amongdepartment clerks In Washington andwhy so few of them are anxious to getaway on vacations
