Notre Dame (0-1) vs. Michigan (1-0)
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish march into The Big House on Saturday to take on the
Michigan Wolverines. The Irish look for their first win of the season after last week’s loss to South Florida. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly announced earlier this
week that quarterback Tommy Rees will start. Rees came off the bench and played the second half in last week’s game. Michigan looks to start the season 2-0 under
first-year head coach Brady Hoke.

This Week in History
Here’s a look back at some of those unforgettable moments in
college football history for the week of Sept. 5th - 11th:
Sept. 6, 1980 - The Georgia Bulldogs, who would later be
crowned National Champions, were nearly upset in a matchup
against Tennessee. The Volunteers took an early 15-0 lead
behind quarterback Jeff Olszeweski. The Bulldogs trailed 15-9
in the final quarter, before they forced the Volunteers into their
fourth lost fumble on the day. College Football Hall of Fame
running back Herschel Walker capitalized on the turnover with
a nine-yard touchdown run and Georgia topped Tennessee
16-15.
Sept. 8, 1984 - George Swarn and Otis Cheathem became the
first opponents to record 200 yards rushing in the same game.
Swarn stacked up 239 yards for Miami of Ohio while Western
Michigan’s Cheathem ran for 219 yards. Western Michigan
edged the RedHawks 17-13 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Sept. 11, 1993 - In front of a then-NCAA regular season record
106,851, No. 10 Notre Dame upset No. 2 Michigan 27-23 in
Ann Arbor, Mich. Just before halftime, Irish running back Kevin
McDougal recorded his second rushing touchdown of the day,
which put Notre Dame up 24-10. The Wolverines added two
scores late, but came up short against the Fighting Irish. Notre
Dame would go on to finish the 1993 season No. 2 in the
country with an 11-1 record.
Sept. 7, 1996 - In an offensive frenzy, Arizona State topped No.
23 Washington 45-42 in an early season Pac-10 shootout at Sun
Devil Stadium. College Football Hall of Famer Pat Tillman,
helped ASU gain a 42-21 edge with 12 minutes remaining.
Freshman quarterback Brock Huard rallied the Huskies in his
college football debut with a touchdown pass and run. Fellow
freshman Corey Dillon tied the game with a seven-yard run.
Arizona State hit the game winning 38-yard field goal with just
two seconds to play. The game ended up to be crucial in the
Pac-10 race as the Sun Devils won the league with an 8-0
record, while the Huskies finished 7-1.

Fiesta Bowl Team of the Week
No. 3 Alabama at No. 23 Penn State
Sat., Sept. 10, 1:30 p.m. (ABC)
Both teams plan to play two quarterbacks. In last
season’s contest, the Nittany Lions never could
overcome their four turnovers when Alabama took
the win 24-3. Penn State will have the advantage of
playing at home, but will need to find a way to move
the ball against the Tide’s defense. Alabama held its
opponent to 90 total yards last week.
No. 21 Missouri at Arizona State
Fri., Sept. 9, 8:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Missouri looks to extend its regular season non-
conference winning streak to 23 games. The Tigers
will now have played two of their last three games in
Sun Devil Stadium, which includes last year’s
appearance in the Insight Bowl. Arizona State is
coming off a dominating performance and has an
extra day to prepare for its first home game against
Missouri since 1989.
Utah at USC
Sat., Sept. 10, 5:30 p.m. (Versus)
Utah arrives at the Coliseum to take on USC in its
first Pac-12 conference game. USC edged Minnesota
19-17 in the season opener while Utah topped Mon-
tana State 27-10 in its first game under the new
conference.
With their dramatic 50-48 win over No. 14 TCU, the Baylor Bears (1-0) are the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the
Week for games through the extended opening weekend of Sept. 3. Quarterback Robert Griffin III threw a career-high five touchdown passes on 21-for-27 passing and helped the Bears gain a 47-23 advantage going into the fourth quarter. TCU
responded to take a 48-47 lead before Griffin led the Bears on a 60-yard game-winning drive, catching a key 15-yard pass on third-and-10. Aaron Jones’ 37-yard field goal with
1:04 seconds to play put Baylor back in the lead, and an interception with 10 seconds left sealed the upset. The victory was Baylor’s first over a ranked opponent since de-
feating No. 16 Texas A&M in overtime on Oct. 30, 2004, and earned the Bears revenge after losing 45-10 at TCU last season. For more information on the Tostitos Fiesta
Bowl National Team of the Week, go to footballwriters.com or fiestabowl.org.
