Instructional Objectives

1. Explain the role of testing intact rock materials.2. List the genetic rock types and subtypes, and predict their properties

as engineering materials.3. Classify rock types, using field tables.4. Explain the effect of mineralogy on the engineering properties of the

rock.5. Define strength, hardness, abrasiveness, durability, and swelling

potential, and predict the effect on engineering properties.6. Calculate bulk density, specific gravity, unit weight, and porosity of

rock.7. Propose rock tests that would better predict the engineering behavior

of rock masses.8. Solve using calculations, problems involving the following

properties of rock: Bulk density, specific gravity, unit weight, and porosity.
