NISER SEMINAR

GEARED CENTRIFUGEGEARED CENTRIFUGEVED PRAKASH

NISER

2

INTRODUCTION

● One of the first projects at NISER.● Talk will consist of the following topics :

– Introduction { trailor }● Aims & expectations.● Advantages over commercial centrifuge● Brief discussion about its working, Innovative ideas &

current status.

– Design & brief discussion about the spares.

– Story behind.

3

Main aims...

● To create a cost effective centrifuge having NISER logo on it.

● To study the behavior of various materials at high RPM.

● To get exposure towards the technical aspects of the machines.

4

How does it look ???

5

Why this project is special ???

6

Compare the two.....

●Commercial● RPM = 18,000 .

● PRICE = Rs 1.7 LAKH

● Similar to Windows

●NISER made● RPM = 30,000 & even

more with greater control.

● PRICE = Less than Rs. 50,000

● Similar to LINUX.

8

Current Status of project

● Project has been successfully completed up to about 60%.

● Stage 1 – gear system + framework [completed]

● Stage 2 – platform [blue-print completely prepared]

● Cooling system – 1/20 complete.

9

Personal inventions

● Cooling system.● Vibration reduction by “ fluid coupler ” .

[this part is generally not found in commercial centrifuges]

● Low cost Speed indicator.

END OF THE TRAILOR....

PARTS OF THE CENTRIFUGE

13

THE MOTOR

● Rating – 1 Hp , 3000 RPM

● PROVIDES THE DRIVING POWER

14

The gear box

● Provides RPM multiplication of range :– 4th gear – 1 : 4

– 3rd Gear – 1 : 6

– 2nd Gear – 1 : 8.5

– 1st Gear – 1 : 12

● Provides speed control.● Clutch system provides smooth transmission of

power.

16

Modifications brought in the engine

● Piston, cylinder , crank, dynamo, carburetor, kick were removed.

● Crank was replaced by specially made SS shaft.

● Many holes were made in the gearbox for the circulatory system.

17

THE FLUID COUPLERfile:///media/RR%20UJJWAL/coupler.png

18

Its Position in centrifuge

● Works on the principle of viscosity.

● Transmits only RPM & no vibrations.

● Latex is used because :– Sticky

– Inert

– Viscous & stable.

21

The HEART of the machine...

● It is a small centrifugal pump designed typically for pumping gear oil.

● It is the HEART of oil cooling system.● It circulates gear oil through the radiator & the

gearbox.● It also supplies gear oil to the dry regions of

gearbox.

22

23

RPM METER

● Based on simple principle of EMI in a dynamo.

● The amount of voltage developed by dynamo can be used to estimate RPM.

● Cost Rs. 150.

24

INNOVATIVE IDEAS

● USE OF DISC BRAKE● SPECIAL RUBBER BUSHES.● RPM METER● CENTRAL PUMP & COOLING SYSTEM● VIBRATION REDUCTION BY FLUID

COUPLER.

25

RUBBER BUSHES

● Slipper pieces have been used in place of rubber bushes for mounting the gearbox & motor.

● Advantage – cheap & easily available.

● Also , they have high tensile strength & are long lasting.
