GENDERWhat is gender?

DEFINITION: Gender refers to what it means to be a male or a female in our society and

culture. Gender is socially constructed and determines

the roles, behaviour, activities and attributes that a

particular society considers appropriate for men and

women.

Gender is not the same as sex!

Gender is different to sex (the biological differences between males and females). Gender describes the roles of males and females. We will look at…

-How have gender roles of men and women changed throughout history?

-What influences gender roles?-What are some gender stereotypes?-How is gender represented in film?

Gender StereotypesDEFINITION: A stereotype is an

oversimplified and conventional idea or image, used to label or define people or objects.

The media plays a powerful role in influencing the way we view gender.

Q. What gender stereotypes do the following images portray?

How do each of the following influence conceptions of gender? You can discuss these with fellow students at your table, then write your ideas on a Word doc in your laptop. Email to andrew.d.robinson@det.nsw.edu.au
