JOSEPH THE BUSINESSMAN SHREWD YET GODLY

 I. Introduction

A. Jacob arrived in Egypt.

1. Jacob and Joseph meet!

2. Jacob felt life couldn’t get any better!

a) He would live another 17 years!

 B. They were keepers of the livestock.

1. “Shepherd loathsome to Egyptians.”

a) Jewish shepherd slaughtered for sacrifice! 

II. Genesis 47:1-3

A. They were to say they were keepers of livestock?”

1. Yes he did!

a) They were herdsmen.” (1) Should have been

translated “herdsmen.”

(2)   Genesis 13:7(a) So they do as instructed.

III.       Genesis 47:4-6

A. They are “sojourners”!

1. Pharaoh tells Joseph to settle them in

Goshen!

IV. Genesis 47:7

A. Pharaoh receive a blessing from Jacob.

1. Pharaoh is not God’s man.

2. Jacob is old and is still God’s man!

 V. Gen 47:8-12

A. Abraham lived to be 175 years old.

1. He chose a hard path.

a) It was his choice to steal the

birthright!b) That choice led

him to Uncle Laban.

(1) Those choices resulted in a

hard life!

(a)  A warning to us.  VI. Genesis 47:13-17

A. Joseph a shrewd businessman.

1. Pharaoh rich collecting money for food.

2. When money ran out, people bartered their livestock!

VII.       Genesis 47:18-22

A. The following year they agree to sell their lands and themselves into slavery.

1. Egyptian priests lived off of a rations supplied

by Pharaoh. VIII. Genesis 47:23-26

A. It was ingenious, and gracious!

1. 1/5th be returned to Pharaoh!

 IX. Genesis 47:27-31

A. Jacob’s 147 years old.

1. Joseph agrees to return his remains to Canaan.

a) Jacob worships the Lord.

 X. CONCLUSION

A. Joseph’s “business practices”.

1. Made most of his time!

a) He had 7 years to prepare before the

famine!(1) Time one thing we will never have again.

2. Always “on time!”a) You must be on

time.

(1) Joseph didn’t have time to waste!

3. He was organized!a) Didn’t “fly by the seat of his pants”.

(1) He had a plan!

4. Worked with urgency!

a) He did not put it off.5. He worked with zeal!

a) Worked “as unto the Lord”!

(1) Hard getting behind an idea their leader doesn’t believe in!

(2) Colossians 3:23-24(a) He knew vision

was from the Lord!

(b) Genesis 47:25(i) We should be about our Father’s

business!
