Why are many African nations bilingual and why do they

have European style governments and institutions? European influences have greatly affected Ghana/African culture.

● Ghana was colonized by the British who practiced Indirect Rule. (Indigenous people were allowed to hold positions of authority and ownership)

● Resources and great wealth were diverted to European nations resulting in slower development of African economies once independence was attained.

In 1960 roughly 100 linguistic and cultural groups were recorded in Ghana.

85.4 percent of Ghana's more than 25 million people are part of four main tribes: Akan, Mole-Dagbon, Ewe and Ga-Dangme. Another 13 percent is made up of the Gurma, Guan, Grusi and Madne Busanga tribes. Various other tribes constitute the remaining 1.6 percent of Ghana's population.
