A global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of hand washing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.Global Hand washing Day is an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times.

Different types of hand hygiene

1) Routine hand wash

Agents: Water & Non-Antimicrobial soapPurpose : Remove soil & transient microorganismsArea : All surfaces of hands & fingersMin duration : 15 seconds

2) Antiseptic Hand wash

Agents: Water and antimicrobial soap (e.g., chlorhexidine, iodine and iodophors, chloroxylenol [PCMX], triclosan)Purpose : Remove or destroy transient microorganisms and reduce resident flora (persistent activity)Area : All surfaces of hands & fingersMin duration : 15 seconds

3) Antiseptic hand rub

Agents : Alcohol based hand rubPurpose : Remove or destroy transient microorganisms and reduce resident flora (persistent activity)Area : All surfaces of hands & fingersMin duration : Until the hands are dry

4) Surgical Antisepsis

Agents: Water and antimicrobial soap (e.g., chlorhexidine, iodine and iodophors, chloroxylenol [PCMX], triclosan)Water and non-antimicrobial soap (i.e., plain soap) followed by an alcohol-based surgical hand scrub product with persistent activityPurpose : Remove or destroy transient microorganisms and reduce resident flora (persistent activity)Area : Hands & ForearmsMin duration : 2 – 6 minutes
