Geographical distribution: India, Africa

State flower of Tamil Nadu, India

Deciduous perennial climbing plant

Root: tuberous, cylindrical / flattened and at

maturity corms

Description

Stem: 3 – 6 mtrs.

Leaves: alternate, simple, ovate, lanceolate

Flowers: solitary, born on upper part of the

stem, eye catching multicoloured and uniquely

structured flowers, remains fresh for 7 days

Stamens: radiating, long, glabrous

Ovary: 3 chambers

Style: sharply bent, 30 – 150 seeds / capsule

Each seed is round and bright red

Propagation by tuberous corm
