God’s Redeeming LovePart 1 – “A Heart Wrenching Marriage”

Hosea 1:1-11

2 John 1:4

“It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in

the truth, just as the Father commanded us.”

Heart Wrenching Marriage

Hosea

Our Husband

The Greek name for Jesus corresponds to the Hebrew name Joshua, which is a lengthened form of Hosea, meaning “salvation.”

Hosea 1:1-111 The word of the LORD that came to

Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel:

2 When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, "Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD." 3 So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

4 Then the LORD said to Hosea, "Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5 In that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel."

6 Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the LORD said to Hosea, "Call her Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no longer show love to the house of Israel, that I should at all forgive them. 7 Yet I will show love to the house of Judah; and I will save them—not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but by the LORD their God."

8 After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah,

Gomer had another son. 9 Then the LORD said, "Call him Lo-Ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.

10 "Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.' 11 The people of Judah and the people of Israel will be reunited, and they will appoint one leader and will come up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea 1:11 The word of the LORD that came to

Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel:

Deuteronomy 18:15

“The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You

must listen to him.”

Michael P.V. Barrett

“All prophets, priests, and kings were lesser messiahs and types of

the Ideal Messiah.”

Hosea 3:1

The LORD said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again,

though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love

the sacred raisin cakes.”

Hosea 1:2-3

2 When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, "Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD." 3 So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

Hosea 4:12

“A spirit of prostitution leads them astray…”

Baal Worship

Jeremiah 2:2-3

“I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your

betrothal…Israel was holiness to the Lord”

Hosea 2:14-15“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and

bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.”

Hosea 1:2

“…take children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from

the LORD."

Hosea 41 Hear the word of the LORD, you

Israelites, because the LORD has a charge to bring against you who live in the land:        "There is no faithfulness, no

love, no acknowledgment of

God in the land.

Hosea 4

2 There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

Hosea 43 Because of this the land mourns,

and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish of the sea are dying.”

Hosea 1:4-5 4 Then the LORD said to Hosea,

"Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5 In that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel."

Hosea 1:6&8“Call her Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no

longer show love to the house of Israel, that I should at all forgive them.”

“Call him Lo-Ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”

Hosea 1:10

“Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted.

Hosea 1:10&11In the place where it was said to

them, ‘You are not my people, they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’ The people of Judah and the people of Israel will be reunited, and they will appoint one leader and will come up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.

Romans 9:23-2723What if he did this to make the riches

of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory— 24even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? 25As he says in Hosea:

"I will call them 'my people' who are not my people; and I will call her 'my loved one' who is not my loved one," 26and, "It will happen that in the very place

where it was said to them,     'You are not my people,'     they will be called 'sons of the living

God.'

"27Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:    "Though the number of the Israelites

be like the sand by the sea,      only the remnant will be saved.

1 Peter 2:9-10“But you are a chosen people, a royal

priesthood” says Peter, “a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

Questions1. Through Hosea’s steadfast and faithful

love to Gomer, which we will see more of, who was horribly unfaithful; can you feel deep down God’s love for sinners in spite of our sin?

2. Is the gospel being preached through your relationship to your spouse or through your relationship with other people who are close to you? How is your faithfulness to the one true husband when your spouse is being unfaithful to you?

3. Have you been on the receiving end of unfaithfulness?
