Introduction

• Oracle Calendar– Deprecated since 2008

• No Updates• No Enhancements• No Security Fixes• Limited Support

• Now what?

Introduction

• Google Calendar Transitions– LTS Client Services

• Early 2008

– Athletics• Summer 2009

– Student Affairs, Residential Services, University Relations, and Provost’s Office

• January and February 2010

– More stems coming soon

Feature Comparison

• Google Calendar > Oracle Calendar– Powerful Features

• Web Interface• Multiple Calendars & Layering• Web Publishable Calendars• Brief demonstration…

Demonstration

• Single Calendar Demo– Create Event

– Move Event

– Make Repeating

– Show Google Map integration

– Show e-mail, pop-up, and SMS reminders

• Add Guests Demo– Check Availability

– Invite Others

– Show how to set access permissions

– Private Events

• Layered Calendar Demo– Create Additional Calendar

• Explicitly tell people that ANYTHING that affects their free/busy availability MUST be on their one individual calendar. It would be wrong to have a separate class calendar, work calendar, and personal calendar. This is because people will only be looking at an individual’s main calendar to determine if they are free or busy at any given time.

– Demonstrate Layering

– Show URL / Website Embedding

Why should we do this?

• Oracle Calendar is deprecated– No updates, enhancements, or fixes– Limited functionality compared to Google

• Efficiency of a unified calendar platform– Doodle is a symptom of our problem– Internal and external sharing is now possible

• Superior PDA synchronization capabilities

• Free (ask me why)

Next Steps

1. Timeline Commitments

2. Hands-on Training

3. Move Data / Reconfigure PDAs

4. Seek Ongoing Feedback
