Do you believe everything you read online? If it is online and shared 100 times on Twitter, it must be true, right?Well, Google has something to say about that. The largest search engine is on a mission to clean up the“information junk” and supply its visitors with the most truthful results.

Google Sees The Truth Their Way

A team of Google researchers released a report earlier thismonth on truthfulness and website rankings. What the reporthints is that Google may have to launch a new system forranking websites according to the trueness of the information ontheir pages. Website publishers will have to think how authenticand veracious their information is in order to ensure theirwebsite appears high in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).

Online Reputation To Be Replaced With TheTruthfulness Signals?

Google’s PageRank is an algorithm which ranks websites basedon their online reputation. The more popular your websites is inthe online space, the more social signals are sent to Google thatyour website is reputable and provides value to its readers.

Websites with unsubstantiated information will be penalised andwill appear lower in SERPs. What is unsubstained information? This is information which is not proven to be true. Awebsite with celebrity gossip for example will be shown lower than a reputable website which provides news and interviews with celebrities.

How Will The New System Work?

Google has a vast collection of over 2.8 billion facts which are pulled from trustful resources on the Internet. Thiscompilation of Google facts is called Google’s “Knowledge Vault”. The new Knowledge-Based Trust (KBT) will takeinto consideration what Google already knows to be true and what Google doesn’t consider to be true – thereforecreating a rating of how veracious a website is. This cross-reference of Google facts will assign a truth score foreach page on a website.

Pages with unsubstantiated information or false claims will be penalised and shown low on SERPs.

When Does Google Start The Truthfulness Project?

Google’s team is still working on the system. There are many issues which Google needs to solve first; mainlyissues linked to the way KBT will deal with finding and replacing new information and facts on certain topics.
