TECH TALK ON

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Google is the most widely used web based search engine

Google began in March 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Ph.D. students at Stanford University

Originally the search engine used the Stanford website with the domain google.stanford.edu.

The domain google.com was registered on September 15, 1997

They formally incorporated their company, Google, on September 4, 1998 at a friend's garage in Menlo Park, California

oBy the end of 1998, Google had an index of about 60 million pages

oThe main reason behind the success of google was because of its simple design

oIn the year 2003 a companion product to the search engine Google News was found

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

ANDROID

ANDROID

• Linux-based operating system for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.

• it also has been used in televisions, gaming consoles, digital cameras and other electronics.

APPLICATIONS

Android has a growing selection of third party applications, which can be acquired by users either through an app store such as Google Play or the Amazon Appstore, or by downloading and installing the application's APK file from a third-party site

•As of July 2013, there are more than one million applications available for Android in the Play Store

•As of May 2013, 48 billion apps have been installed from the Google Play store

•Applications that extend the functionality of devices, are developed primarily in the Java programming language using the Android software development kit (SDK)

•The SDK includes a comprehensive set of development tools, including a debugger software libraries, a handset emulator based on QEMU documentation, sample code, and tutorials

Android versions consist of a kernel based on the Linux kernel's longterm 3.4 branch, varying in version numbers depending on the actual Android device

Android versions older than 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich were based on the Linux kernel versions 2.6.x

ANDROID SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

AUGMENTED REALITY

•Augmented reality (AR) is a live, copy, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer.

•As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one

•Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match

•With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable.

GOOGLE

Google glass?

Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display (OHMD) that is being developed by Google in the Project Glass research and development project

Google Glass displays information in a smartphone-like hands-free format, that can communicate with the Internet via natural language voice commands

Glass is being developed by Google X, which has worked on other futuristic technologies such as driverless cars

•Thad Starner, an augmented reality expert, is a technical lead/manager on the project.

HARDWARE

•TouchpadA touchpad is located on the side of Google Glass, allowing users to control the device by swiping through a timeline-like interface displayed on the screen. Sliding backward shows current events, such as weather, and sliding forward shows past events, such as phone calls, photos, circle updates, etc.

•Camera•Google Glass has the ability to take photos and record 720p HD video. While video is recording, the screen stays on.

•Can take photos of 5 Megapixels

•Display•The Explorer version of Google Glass uses a Liquid Crystal

on Silicon (LCoS), field-sequential color, LED illuminated display.•The display's LED illumination is first P-polarized and then

shines through the in-coupling polarizing beam splitter (PBS) to the LCoS panel. The panel reflects the light and alters it to S-polarization at active pixel sites. The in-coupling PBS then reflects the S-polarized areas of light at 45° through the out-coupling beam splitter to a collimating reflector at the other end. Finally, the out-coupling beam splitter reflects the collimated light another 45° and into the wearer's eye.
