Girls on the Run CurriculumThe curriculum incorporates training for
a 5k with lessons that inspire third through eigth grade girls to develop essential life skills. The 10 week curriculum is divided into three parts that foster healthy growth in each of these areas:
• Exploring what makes them unique• Examining good decision-making skills• Exploring responsibility to the
community
An emphasis is placed on independent thinking, the importance of making healthy choices, healthy group dynamics and problem solving. The curriculum rejects defeating others and stresses peer support and doing one’s best.
12 weeks.24 lessons.350,000 girls and counting.
Our MissionWe inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
Our VisionWe envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.
So what does Girls on the Run do?One girl put it this way, “I learned that I am the boss of my brain.” We inspire girls to know and activate their limitless potential and to boldly pursue their dreams. No limits. No constraints. Only opportunities to be remarkable.
Our History
In 2007, Dale Espich, President and CEO of GetFit! Shiawassee, organized GOTR Shiawassee under the auspices of GetFit! Shiawassee. The inaugural season commenced with Deb and Mary coaching 23 girls in Corunna and Owosso. By 2011, the program had grown to 137 volunteers at 16 locations and 19 teams serving 413 girls.
Our objective is to educate and empower girls at an early age in order to prevent at-risk activities, which we define to include substance/alcohol use, eating disorders, early onset of sexual activity, sedentary lifestyle, depression, suicide attempts and confrontations with the juvenile judicial system.
Our 2012 Goals:• To establish an Advisory Council• To build a Committee Structure• To design a Fundraising Program• To plan for Sustainable Growth & Expansion
