What a great month and a great start to what is shaping up to be a fabulous year! It never ceases to amaze all of us just how quickly September is behind us and October is here! This amazing weather certainly makes us think that summer was only a few days ago.
Throughout the month of September we had the opportunity to welcome students and their families to our school in many ways:
Our Open House/Meet the Teacher night on October 1st was an exciting event!
Students participated in a special welcome assembly the second week of school
Students participated in our Terry Fox Walk on Friday, September 26th!
We held our first Scorch Assembly of the school year, where we recognized ‘Students of the Month’ with special certificates and enjoyed two very special presentations from Mrs. Zuccarelli and Ms. Zbogar’s class!
We also welcomed families and community members to the 55th Annual Kenollie Fall Fair that was held on Saturday, September 27th. As always the sun was shining! A special thanks to Chair of the Peel District School Board, Janet McDougald, Member of Parliament Stella Ambler and City Councillor Jim Tovey, for joining us as honoured guests.
Once again I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank our amazing team of parent volunteers who were led this year by Carmelina Chiofalo-Chung and Karen Ho-James! This year we welcomed some exciting new activities and events, and I want to thank the students and the parent volunteers for their fresh ideas and enthusiasm! It was a terrific day and we certainly appreciate your generosity of time, your superb organizational skills, yummy baking and cooking and the many, many ways you donated to our Fair. Working with all of you, and being a part of this year’s fair truly makes us all smile! On behalf of all the teachers and students here at Kenollie, THANK-YOU!
This year our goal at Kenollie, and in the Peel District School Board, is to Inspire.Greatness. Together. Each and every day I am inspired by the kind and caring community of learners we have here at Kenollie. From the friendly “hellos” and “how are you’s” during the morning walk around, to the excited smiles I see within classrooms and on the school yard throughout the day! Our Kenollie students love coming to school and they show their love of learning by engaging in collaborative activities with their peers and teachers. By working together with parents and volunteers we are able to make a positive difference in the lives of the children, and their achievement soars! Thank you to everyone who is a part of this special school for bringing the greatness to our community!
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the amazing Peel produced videos from this school year, I encourage you to visit the YouTube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/user/PeelSchools! We showcased the “Happy Montage”, The “#Best Day” and “Epic” videos last night in the school gym during Open House. If you missed them, they are certainly worth checking out!
Looking forward to a great second month of learning, adventure and inspiration!
Sincerely,
Jennifer El Refaie, Proud Principal of Kenollie Public School

Kenollie Grade 3 and Grade 6 students participated in the
Primary and Junior provincial assessments last Spring.
Once again students at Kenollie performed well above
the provincial and board averages. It should be
remembered that EQAO's assessment results are just one
piece of information about student achievement. At
Kenollie we review the detailed data and examine results
in specific areas, and on specific questions. The results
are used to create action plans for the current school year
as we aim to target weaker areas for greater student
success.
Throughout this school year, our school and Board will
be focusing on developing stronger numeracy skills as
this has been noted as an area of need. More information
about the Board and School Success plans will be shared
during our October School Council meeting on October
27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Parents and guardians are invited
to attend!
Percentage of Grade 3 students achieving at or above the
Provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4)
Kenollie Board Province Reading 92% 71% 70%
Writing 95% 78% 78%
Math 92% 66% 67%
Percentage of Grade 6 students achieving at or above the
Provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4)
Kenollie Board Province Reading 97% 78% 79%
Writing 100% 79% 78%
Math 75% 52% 54%
Our results are a reflection of the dedicated Kenollie
teachers, at all grade levels, and the positive parental
support in our community. The strong partnerships
between the school and the home truly support our
students and have lead to these outstanding results!
Individual results were sent home with our Grade 4
students on Thursday, October 2nd; former Grade 6
student results were also forwarded to Queen Elizabeth
Sr. Public School, or mailed to student homes.
Finally, we have also sent home information pamphlets
with our current Grade 3 and 6 students who will be
writing the assessments in the Spring of 2015. The dates
for the Spring assessment have now been released. Our
Kenollie specific dates have yet to be determined, so
parents are asked to please plan trips and appointments
outside of these dates: May 25th to June 5th, 2015.

Tips for being a smart trick-or-treater Halloween is a fun and exciting time, but safety should be the
number one concern. Here are some safety tips for children:
Wear a properly fitted costume that is bright and non-
flammable. Use reflective tape on your costume so you
can be seen in the dark.
Use face make-up or enlarge the eyes on your mask so you
can see well. When wearing a mask, push it up on your
head while walking.
Teach children to visit the front door of well lit homes and
never go inside.
Help your child plan a route and a time to be home.
Remind children to always walk on the sidewalk and obey
traffic and pedestrian signals.
Have an adult check treats at home before allowing
children to eat them.
Younger children should go trick-or-treating with an adult.
Older children are reminded to trick-or-treat in groups.
Teach children their home phone number and how to call
9-1-1 if they have an emergency or become lost.
Since 1994, parents and students from around the world
have celebrated World Teacher Appreciation Day to
commemorate the work of teachers and their contributions to
society. During the week of October 5, take the time to let
your child's teacher know he or she is truly appreciated. Thank your child's teacher and let them know
they are making a difference.
Peel schools will pay tribute to bus drivers on Bus
Driver Appreciation Day on Oct. 29. The day will
be celebrated with special activities and events
that provide teachers, students and parents an opportunity to
thank the people who safely transport over 36,000 students to
and from school each day.
If your child rides the bus to school, take this opportunity to
thank the bus driver for his or her contribution and ask your
child to do so too. The Peel board appreciates the important job
bus drivers do each school day and Oct. 29 provides an oppor-
tunity to give these individuals the recognition they deserve.
SCORCH continues to travel! When travelling, please remem-
ber to take along your Scorch t-shirts and to
photograph your children wearing them some place really neat!
Please send your pictures to Ms El Refaie’s email inbox to
have them featured in our next newsletter and posted on our
office message board!
James & Adam travelled to Salzburg, Austria this summer!
The Annual Halloween Parade for Kenollie will take place on
October 31st at 1:30 pm. Weather permitting, students will
be walking through the streets of our community. We look
forward to seeing many parents cheer on our students.
Last Spring, Mr. Currie organized a group of students who
would create special artwork for display at the Mississauga
Living Arts Centre. There were many pieces showcased
throughout the summer months.
This Fall we were pleased to
learn that one of our Grade 4
(last year Grade 3) student’s
art work was selected to re-
main on display for the 2014-
2015 school year. We are so
thrilled to share this amazing
achievement with all of you!
Pictured above is Marcus and his painting! If you have a
chance to stop by and visit the Living Arts Centre, I am sure
that you will enjoy a close up, in person view, of this amazing
work! Way to go Marcus!
All volunteers must be approved!
Please make an appointment with Ms. El Refaie to arrange a
volunteer interview. The entire process can take up to 12
weeks, so if you are looking at volunteering this school year we
suggest you make this contact sooner than later!
Regional Learning Choices Programs unlock passions, potential
All of our schools offer a variety of programs designed to
unlock students’ passions and potential. Some students have a
strong interest in a particular area. For those students, a
Regional Learning Choices Program may be a good option.
Find out more about our programs, including information night
dates and times, at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs.
Our School Council elected parent membership process
has now been completed. We are pleased to announce
the following people who have stepped into roles for the
2014-15 school year.
Co Chair Laura Halbert
Co-Chair Tammie Rix
Treasurer Alison Mullett
Secretary Shaylene Finch
Principal: Jennifer El Refaie
Staff Rep: Ms Zuccarelli
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 27
at 7:00 pm. An agenda will be shared on our School
Council Webpage (http://schools.peelschools.org/1279/
kschoolcouncil/Pages/default.aspx) prior to the meeting.
Parents are invited to attend all of our meetings, you
don’t need to be an elected member. We are looking
forward to seeing many new and returning faces at our
Annual General Meeting on Monday, November 24,
2014 at 7:00 p.m..
Peel Board Advantage Education Fair on Oct. 25

our middle school and secondary school programming in
Mississauga. Staff and students will be available to answer
questions about the schools’ academic and extracurricular

We are looking to hire some additional
Supply Lunchroom Supervisors.
While we realize that many of you are
unable to commit to a full-time
lunchroom supervisor position, we are
looking for people who might be
interested in being on our ‘supply’ list. You would only work
on an as needed basis, and you would only be contacted
once we are aware of an absence of one of our full time
supervisors.
It is always great if we have a few parents or guardians on our
list who we are able to call upon, especially when we only
receive short notice. If you know of anyone in the community
who doesn’t have children here and you think might be a good
fit, please pass this information along to them as well.
The process involves an interview with the principal, reference
checks and the completion of a separate Criminal Record
Check (not the one we use for volunteering). The final step is
setting you up as an employee of the school board. The
process takes approximately 2 weeks.
You would be contributing to our school in a positive way, as
our lunchroom supervisors make it possible for students to
enjoy eating lunch at school and having some time to play
during the lunch hour. If you think you might be able to help
us out, please contact Ms El Refaie at the school to get the
process started.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Did you know that litter is a safety hazard, discourages
development, lowers property values and costs money?
According to the Region of Peel, litter can attract animals and
insects, harm pets and serve as a breeding ground for disease.
Here are some tips for reducing waste at school:
Provide your child with a litter-less lunch which could
contain:
refillable water bottle
returnable, reusable or refillable drink containers
instead of plastic bottles and cans
snacks and sandwiches stored in plastic containers
fruit that requires no wrap such as bananas, apples
Put trash in the appropriate container. If a recycling bin
isn't available, ask where you can find one and hold on to
garbage until you can dispose of it properly.
Reduce and reuse as much as you can before you recycle.
Reuse plastic bags, the other side of a sheet of paper etc.
If you see litter, pick it up!
Set a good example. Don't be a litterbug.
Take part in neighbourhood cleanups - litter prevention
requires the community to work together.
According to the 2011 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report
Card, 93 per cent of children and youth are not meeting
Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines. These declining
activity levels are linked to obesity, illness and chronic diseases
(i.e., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer).
Using active transportation for the school journey is one of the
easiest ways for students to get regular daily physical activity.
Managing time to allow for the walk or bike ride to school will
become a positive habit that leads to children arriving on time,
refreshed and energized for the school day. In fact, University
of Illinois research has found that just 20 minutes of easy
walking boosts performance in the areas of the brain that
support math and reading achievement.
Walking to school also helps out the environment. Eliminating
just four short trips per week can reduce emissions by up to
100 kg of carbon dioxide per year. Families that participate in
active travel to school can prevent almost 1,000 kg of carbon
dioxide per year and save money in fuel costs as well. Also,
when more children walk to school and fewer parents drive
their children, the areas near school zones become safer for
pedestrians.
That is why our school will be participating in International
Walk to School Month on October 8. On that day—and
throughout the month, if you can—walk, bike, blade, scooter,
skip or hop to school….but don’t drive!
International Walk to School month is part of the Active &
Safe Routes to School program. Visit
www.saferoutestoschool.ca/ for more information.
