What is it?

What information does it give us?

CogAT: Cognitive Abilities Test

COGNITIVE: intellectual activity skills such as thinking and reasoning

Measures both general & specific cognitive abilities

The CogAT is a COGNITIVE abilities assessment used for ALL groups of learners

NOT just for Advanced Learning Program Placement

In combination with other relevant information, scores can be used to differentiate instruction in ways that enhance learning.

CogAT measures three different cognitive abilities:

Verbal Battery Quantitative Battery

NonVerbal Battery

Assesses a student’s• vocabulary

efficiency and verbal memory

• ability to determine word relationships

• comprehendideas

Assesses a student’s• understanding of

basic concepts and relationships essential for learning mathematics

• relationalconcepts by discovering relationships to figure out a rule or principle

Assesses a student’s reasoning using pictures and geometric shapes

Raw Scores Number of Items = the number of questions on the

subtests.

Number Att. (attempted) = the number of questions the student answered.

Number Correct = the total number of items the student answered correctly.

Definition of RAW SCORE

The CogAT allows comparisons of the performance of students with the performance of other students in the nation of the same grade who took the same test at the same time of year.

The CogAT allows comparisons of the performance of students with the performance of other students in the nation of the same age who took the same test.

Ability Profile System
