What we have discovered:
Upon several weeks of research group three has came to many conclusions that Virginia
State University could become more sustainable. We have noticed that the students are unaware
of the situations happening in their everyday environment. Grades K-12 and Higher learning
institutions should now make it their goal to teach students the responsibility of saving the earth.
“Saving the earth” seems like something that is out of our hands, but actually we possess the
solution. We are concerned that if we do not start now we will make no achievements in life let
alone achievements with the environment. The earth is our first home and without the earth we
have nothing. A college is a home away from home so we need to learn to take care of the place
in which we’ve chose to reside. We have several ideas how to incorporate a healthy campus life
with Virginia State University. Here are a few plans, actions, and possible solutions. We have
developed several ideas that could be turned into a project for VSU. We figure that we should
use the resources that we already have, instead of venturing out and trying to developed
nonrealistic ideas. It’s a simple task with major results.

Scared and Scarred:
In the time of change
This change is not only going to take administrative change but a change in the way the
university is run as a whole. Staff, students, visitors, and the tri-city community can contribute.
1. Staff - Staff is defined as the teachers and others individuals that work at Virginia
State University. They are the people that get paid to contribute to the student’s
education in some type of way.
2. Students –We are the body that pays to go gain and maintain an education at this
institution. We are the ones who spend the most time on this campus. Since we
are the actual ones that live here from August to the month of May we should be
the most concerned. We spend at least ten months out of the year on this campus,
and since we do, we can hinder and help the situation.
3. Visitors- They are possibly the prospective students, workers and possible alumni
of the university. They are the individuals that care the most about the looks of the
school. So if we include them in this process they can contribute by caring about
the onlookers points and views .Visitors mean and should mean the most to the
university because they give the most opinions and there first perception can
make or break Virginia State University.

4. Community- since Virginia State University sits on four different counties we
can gain a lot of support from all of the surrounding areas. These Virginia
residents are the people that help keep our institution up and running. They pay
taxes and make lots of contributions to the school. The community is both far and
near for Virginia State so they can and will tell us what we are missing because
they are here for 12 months out of 365 days of the year.
Why change now:
We need this change because people are not aware of their surroundings. We feel that if
they were able to see the actual cause and affects of this problem, they too might start to think of
solution. People say all the time the world is in need of a change but never step up and take
charge. We don’t exactly know if it is because people are scared or if they don’t know what to
exactly do. Sometimes people can be at a loss of words with environmental issues because it can
sometimes take a scientific perspective. What they fail to realize is that science can be fun and if
place in the right hands it can start a new evolution. The world is changing, not for the good, but
for the worse!

Awareness with Royalty
We will use Virginia State Universities Royal court. Our awareness program will focus
on some of these factors. We will use Virginia State University’s royal court to help implement
these plans. We felt that it would be easy to get someone that is close to SGA to start an annual
tradition for VSU students. Information could be spread through forums and flyers. On every
college campus there are people that can easily get points across. Since people in the royal court
were voted into their position it will be easier to gain the attention of our fellow classmates. We
could also make this an annual competition between freshman, sophomore, juniors, and seniors.
We will bring all of the student body together .We have never communicated as one so this is a
way to start.

Topics:
Recycling Bins
• Recycle everything, especially paper
Limit the use of disposable cups and plates & paper napkins
• Ask students to bring washable dishes to school instead of disposables
Change the bulb
• Use compact fluorescent light bulbs
Planting
• More trees and other plant life should be planted on campus. We should not hire people
to come in to do this. We should have students to get involved on campus and take part in
this. This could save the university money and this is a way for organization Greek and
non-Greek, and clubs to complete community service projects. This is also a way
students can come together on campus.
Carpooling
• We could try to encourage ride with your friend day. If you are a student coming on
campus we could implant something like the HOV lane. If you don’t have two or more
people in your car in your car you cannot get on campus during that school day.

The reuse of notebooks
• This is a simple way to save waste. Whenever the semester is done you can take out your
notes, staple and save, then use the binder for the next semester. If you really want to
take an extra step to make your campus greener, use your laptop to take notes at class.
Purchase used clothing
•Usually thought of as something to do to save money, it is also good for the environment!
Recycling clothes minimizes the use of resources to make clothing and puts a dent in the
problem of worldwide sweatshops.
1. There are places such as the good will and Plato’s closet close to
campus. At Plato’s closet you can turn in clothes you don’t want
for money.
Feedback session:
We will ask questions of how they will change what they will do to change
