DESCRIPTION

Community-building can seem like a herculean effort that must be coordinated among many. But it doesn’t have to be. One is plenty. How can we handcraft a fulfilling code career? How can we support peers in developing theirs, whether newcomer or artisan? How can we contribute, without having to be expert? How do we develop social capital among community members, and channel those investments into people who are just entering? How will we craft a thriving community, using only simple tools & scarce local resources? We’ll examine the history of major successes — in Ruby community, Python, and well beyond — and extract lessons to apply generally. It’s a story that weaves in personal narratives of rising into that, both well and clumsily. It’s about transforming minor ambitions & frequent iterations into a scope of change that looks amazing. By making choices to do small things well and thoughtfully, rather than with concern for how they scale. META Title: Handcrafting Community Author: Carina C. @cczona

Make an introduction

@cczona

Words of wisdom:

@cczona

"If you feel a certain way, you're not the only one."

"You think you're throwing a birthday party, where only your friends are going to actually come. You don't expect anyone to show up."

@cczona

"Put your enthusiasm on display"

@cczona

"Do expect people to be generous

in their support"

Mentors gave lots of advance time, mentorship. Then gave access to their networks.

@cczona

"Showing that you have your shit together —that this clearly will be happening again — makes people comfortable with leaping in."

@cczona

"Tell everyone you know. Make it easy for them to tell everyone they know."

@cczona

And make personal invites

@cczona

"If you already know everyonein the room, it's a clique.

Not a community"

@cczona

"Open source the community"

RailsBridgeRailsGirlsPython Software Foundation

@cczona

 "'That's great. Help do that with someone else.'"

Decide what's the essential of the vision. It's okay to say no to offers & requests that are too far afield from that.

@cczona

Create leadership mastery.

@cczona

Self-replicate

as leadersas communities

@cczona

Make way for others

one person carrying too much weight will burn out; thing fizzles w/o them.fostering peers/replacements before you need them assures that people can take care of their needs & keep contributingleaders have more stake in success & more enthusiasm for pursuing it; delegating meaningful roles -> investment in deepening commitments

@cczona

Successful community?Seed more like it.

@cczona

"Yes, And..."

meet a request for help with a better offer, if you can

@cczona

Lend access to brand, network, &

infrastructure

@cczona

Cross-pollinate

- if you don't have enough people to sustain niche community (yet), connect with communities of similar vision even if not similar implementation. piggyback. bootstrap.- do it also out of humility (like lightning talks, it's opportunity to have interesting surprises)
