AtomsThe atom is the smallest particle in science other than the parts that make

up the atom. Atoms are made of

Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons.

Atoms are the basis for chemistry and the

entire Universe.Quit

ElectronsElectrons have a

negative charge.They are the smallest

part in an atom.Found in electron clouds around the

nucleus.Electrons move so

quickly one would not be able to see

them. Quit

ProtonsProtons have a

positive charge.They are 1000 times

bigger than an electron.

Protons are inside the nucleus.

The number of protons is what gives

the Atomic Number on the Periodic Table.

Quit

NeutronsNeutrons have no

charge at all.Neutrons are the

same size as a proton (1000 times bigger than an electron).

Neutrons reside in the nucleus.

Quit

Atoms as a WholeThe electrons revolve

outside of the nucleus. The protons and

neutrons are in the nucleus.

The number of protons plus neutrons equals the mass number of an atom.

Overall an atom is around 0.1-0.5 nm in size.

When Atoms Come TogetherThere are many specific

atoms.When atoms come

together they form the many different elements.

Elements come together to form the molecules that make up the cells of our body.

The many elements we have can be seen on the periodic table.

Quit

The Periodic TableThe Periodic Table represents all of the different elements that

atoms make up.The boxes on the table show the different properties of the atoms

that make up the certain elements.

Quit

HydrogenThe first element on

the Periodic Table1 proton1 electronNo neutronsMakes up around

75% of the earth’s elemental mass.

Quit

OxygenOxygen is the 8th

element on the periodic table.

8 Protons8 Electrons8 NeutronsOxygen comes

together to make Oxygen2, which makes up the gas oxygen we breath.

About the AuthorMy name is Hannah Kinney, and I am a junior

at Grand Valley State University. I am working to become an elementary teacher,

and I am majoring in the sciences. Someday I hope to teach either 3rd or 5th grade in a

school that it hopefully in Western Michigan. If you would like to contact me, my e-mail
