Hanover Area Council of Churches One Body • One Spirit
Let me start by thanking everyone who supported the Changing Lives Shelter by
participating in or attending Hanover Has Talent on February 6th. A special thanks goes
out to Grace United Church of Christ and Acts of Kindness for sponsoring the 20 act
show and to Linda Smith who organizes and emcees the show (this year a week and a half
after knee replacement surgery). The show as always was so very good, with each
performer giving their all.
Hanover Cares House the Homeless Radio-Thon was also a success. We passed our
goal of $6,000.00 (pledged $6700.00). We are very grateful to all the sponsors, radio
personalities, performers, and speakers who made the 18 hours of programming a success
for Changing Lives Homeless Shelter and the Turning Point Interfaith Ministries
programs for the homeless. The talents of Bob Laughman , Rev. Dave Miller, Caleb
Stickles, James Papoutsis, Linda Huber, Rev. Brandon Grady, Ben Grady, Emily Cooke,
and Katelyn Gabler were a blessing to us with their musical offerings. It added so very
much to the program. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the listening audience.
This year has seen a blizzard and an arctic freeze and during that time Changing Lives
Shelter has housed 60 different people including 11 children. We thank everyone who has
helped meet the needs of those in difficult circumstances with clothing, coat, blanket, hat,
scarf, glove, and sock drives. Head-to-toe helping people stay warm and dry is very much
appreciated. The monetary gifts we receive help with the day-to-day operating costs of the
shelter and we consider that an enormous blessing.

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
Jimi Hendrix, the electric guitarist of rock-n-roll fame, receives credit for this statement.
It breaks the stereotype of rock musicians who have Woodstock on their resumé. This
power of love statement sounds like its source would be a philosopher, a religious leader,
or a social activist rather than a rock-n-roll guitarist from the 1960s.
“Peace” is a word rich and deep with meaning. For Christians, we believe that peace
is a vital part of our identity, woven into the fabric of our lives by our Creator. Jesus
Christ makes it so and the Bible tells us this is so: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they
will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9) Peace is also what we do. Jesus Christ
makes it so and the Bible tells us this is so: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent
me, so I send you.” (John 20:21).

We are called to be peace and to make peace.
We are not peacekeepers charged with the task of
maintaining public order. Nor do we carry
“peacemakers,” the nickname for the favorite
handgun of “peace officers” in the old Wild West.
Instead we who follow Jesus Christ embody peace
and we work to create peace.
This means peace is more than an absence of
conflict or mere sentiment. Peace is about right
relationships, forgiveness and reconciliation, and
justice. These are the goals for which the ministries
of HACC strive. I thank each of you for your
contribution, the part you play in making peace here
as the children of God.
St. Francis said it best in his prayer:
“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
“Let me be an instrument…” I wonder if St.
Francis had an electric guitar in mind. I don’t know
if Jimi Hendrix was a Christian or a peace activist or
if he even knew what peace was. I’ll leave those
answers to his fans and others who knew him better
than I. Instead I’ll pray, “Thank you, God, for giving
me a part to play in the divine peace you are
bringing about on earth here in the greater Hanover
area as it is in heaven. May it be a sweet, sweet
sound of music in your ear.”

Council of Churches will once again sponsor a community
Good Friday Service at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. The
service starts at noon and goes to 3PM. It is a beautiful
service of the seven last words of Christ spoken from the
cross. Each twenty-five minute segment is stand alone,
allowing people to come and go as they wish. Each of the
seven segments includes a Call to Worship, hymns,
prayers, a homily from local clergy and an anthem from a
local choir. We invite you to join us in reflection and
prayer on Good Friday as we anticipate the joy which is to
follow on Easter morning.
Blessings to all and may you have a Joyous Easter!

SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY In a continuing feature for our newsletter we will highlight a ministry from a volunteers’ experience.
It is important to understand how those who do the work on a daily basis see Who We Are and What We Do!
Creating a Healthy Culture— The Healthy Hanover Community Gardens Ministry
For the 2016 growing season, gardening
opportunities will be started at several locations in the
Hanover area. These will include the opportunity for
families and individuals to have their own garden plot as
well as garden areas dedicated to growing produce for
the Provide-A-Lunch ministry and the New Hope
Ministries Food Bank.
When we examine communities that have a culture
of health, almost all of them started their efforts with
gardening. That is the primary purpose of the Healthy
Hanover Community Gardens Project.
The need for gardening efforts and nutrition
education has been highlighted by the clients seen at the
Hanover Area Council of Churches Free Medical Clinics
and by the 2015 York and Adams County Health
Assessment which revealed that only 4 percent of the
population eats three or more vegetable helpings a day.
Started under the Greater Hanover Healthcare
Committee, a Task Force of the Community Needs
Committee of the Hanover Area Council of Churches,
the Healthy Hanover Community Gardens Project has
identified three locations, and a possible fourth location,
for gardens in the 2016 growing season. The three
known gardens in Hanover are: 1) a large garden area at
All Saints Episcopal Church which will include both
individual plots and a common garden area to support
the community; 2) individual plots for the residents at
the Clearview Apartments; and 3) a community
supporting garden at Saint Mark Evangelical Lutheran
Church.
In addition to the gardening, this project includes
plans for nutrition classes and vegetable cooking classes
to educate Hanoverians about the benefits of consuming
vegetables and ways to prepare these vegetable items for
consumption.
Donations are sought to support the Healthy
Hanover Community Gardens Project including help
with funding, tools, fencing, tool storage sheds,
composting bins, and other donations in-kind. An
immediate need is the identification of individuals who
can help with plowing and/or rototilling the garden
plots.
For more information and to get involved with the
Healthy Hanover Community Gardens Project contact
the Hanover Area Council of Churches, 717-633-6353
or email; adminHACC@comcast.net. —Gary Laabs

If you will only heed his every commandment that I am commanding you today—loving the
LORD your God, and serving him with all your heart and with all your soul— then he will give
the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, and you will gather in your
grain, your wine, and your oil. —Deuteronomy 11:13-14

Dear Friends / Queridos Amigos,
The Hispanic American Center Hanover (HACH) was
founded in 2006 as a small community program to support
Latino immigrants in the greater Hanover area. It began
through the joint efforts of two immigrant sisters born and
raised in Guatemala, Central America and developed into
the first bilingual service program in the Hanover area.
HACH offers services that provide Latinos of Hanover
with the skills they need to be successful.
Now in its ninth year, HACH continues to grow while
serving our community. The work done by hundreds of
volunteers, and partners that support our mission has made
HACH what it is today and will continue to shape our
future for all in need.
On February 1, 2016, HACH and the Hanover Council
of Churches were linked together by a common belief and
passion. We believe community members have the power
to transform their lives for the better. Our passion will be to
assist them in achieving unimaginable levels of
performance and reaching even higher goals.
Through this joint venture HACH will continue
bringing the following educational programs and events not
only for our individual community members but for local
businesses as well:
English as a Second Language Classes A program
that strives to enable families with limited or no limited
English skills to become integrated members of the
community, with greater knowledge of the culture of their
new environment. This is accomplished by developing
effective coping mechanisms to deal with their familial
issues and the acculturation process.
Path to a New Sound An English pronunciation
program for intermediate and advanced English speakers
who want to improve their overall pronunciation to be
better understood by native speakers. The instructor works
closely with students to address all aspects of speech and
sounds.
Citizenship Classes A program designed to help the
citizenship applicant through the entire application process
providing writing, reading, US civics, history, and
government lessons. During this class, they read, talk, and
write about United States culture, history, and government.
Students also prepare for the United States Citizenship
examination through a class of formal instruction.
Participants remain in the program until the examination in
Philadelphia.
Spanish Classes A program for community members
that wish to expand their universe and become a better-
prepared bilingual citizen. Small group learning
experiences catered to specific needs, whether for business,
medical use, or for the pleasure of conversation. Courses
will be twice a year in the fall & spring.
Interpreting and Translation Services HACH
provides interpretation services for local businesses and
schools to facilitate communication with non-English
speaking parents at school events or medical visits. HACH
focuses on translating materials, forms, letters,
announcements, and other information for the client.
United Media Center Class offers the beginner an
opportunity to learn about the parts of the computer, the
difference between hardware and software, what an
operating system is and how to store files. Participants
practice using the keyboard and the mouse and accessing
computer software programs, use search engines to perform
simple searches and find websites, navigate through web
pages and evaluate web sites, and learn basic online
etiquette and internet safety. This program is made possible
by the support of Unitedhealthcare.
Community Events Each year HACH organizes two
signature events to celebrate Hanover’s diversity
community and to recognize their many achievements:
1) Diversity Summit HACH values the inclusion of
ethnic diversity by supporting professionals in the industry
and community members. The event is held annually in
October and is made possible through the collaborative
efforts of staff from local business, agencies, and schools.
This year’s event will be held at the South Western School
District, Tuesday, October 11 from 7:30 -3:30 PM.
2) Kids’ Day Each year on the last Saturday of the
month of April, HACH invites children, families, cultural
groups, community resources and businesses in and around
York and Adams County to promote global understanding
and celebrate our multicultural diversity through play, the
arts and literacy. This year’s event will be held at the
Hanover Wirt Part, April 30 from 12-4 PM.
As the Executive Director and co-founder of HACH, I
thank Carol Hinkle and Board Members of the Hanover
Area Council of Churches for
graciously welcoming HACH
as one of your ministries.
Thank you/Gracias.
