Tips for keeping your joints healthy Healthy joints are what give you the ability to
continue moving. Here are a few tips to keep your
joints healthy.
Stay active! Regular exercise builds strong muscles
which help support your joints. Plus, any kind of
exercise that gets your heart rate up can help to
reduce swelling in your joints by getting the blood
flowing better. Prolonged periods of stillness can
lead to stiffness in the joints, so get up and move
around, or change positions when sitting for longer
periods of time, fidgeting is encouraged! Exercise
and continued movement is especially important if
you have an artificial joint.
Keep a healthy weight. Maintaining a healthy
weight keeps your joints healthy by reducing any
added stress caused by excess weight.
Know the difference between ache and pain. Any
movement that causes sharp pain in a joint should
be stopped immediately, but an ache in the joint is
different. If you are new to exercise it is common to
experience soreness and achiness at first, but the
more you keep moving the more the stiffness will
ease and you will feel better overall.
Build up your core. Core strength helps to support
your entire body. Not only will it help strengthen
your hips, knees and shoulders, but it will also help
with your balance.
Drink your milk. Calcium helps support strong
bones and strong joints. Make sure you are getting
your daily serving, and if you aren’t sure what
amount that is consult your doctor.
Posture! Your posture can affect your joints as well.
Slouching or rounding forward puts pressure on
your whole. Be sure to sit and stand up tall as often
as possible.

Winter’s Solstice
Celebrating winter’s Solstice
Brings to mind
The Universal Rhythm
That regulates us all.
Our longest night of darkness
Is followed by
The gradual return of light,
As early dawning lingers into night.
And with that comes
Renewal of our faith
In the Power of that Universal Law
To mitigate the darkness of our time.
Phyllis Jamison
Clarity
I dip my hand into Lake Louise
Canadian glacier ice melting
Cold crystals fill my palm
Rainbow shimmery, clear as glass.
So many thoughts freeze in my mind
What shall I do next?
Glacial time, melting, changing shape
The answers become crystal clear.

Resident Snapshot
During my first year in high school, something happened
that would change my life. Our church youth group had
scheduled a softball game with another group. Little did I
know what was about to happen! This beautiful brunette
named Shirlee was called to bat. As I watched her, I
thought I had died and gone to heaven. I asked her if I
could take her home after the game. To my surprise, she
said “yes”. I took her where she lived with her mother. I
was so taken with this attractive young lady, one year my
senior, that when I climbed back into the car I said to
myself, “I hope to marry that sweetheart some day.”
Shirlee joined me in the fall of 1952 as a student at Olivet
College in Kankakee, Illinois. During that school year, we
began to make plans for our life together in marriage, and
we announced our engagement at Christmas. After the
wedding and our honeymoon, Shirlee and I settled in our
living quarters. My studies were life changing for my
major in philosophy laid the academic ground work for
theological studies in seminary.
After graduation from Olivet in August of 1956, we moved
to Kansas City where I earned a “Master’s of Divinity”
degree and later a “Doctorate in Theology”. On May 11,
1961, I was ordained to the Christian ministry and
pastored Presbyterian Churches in Yakima, Spokane and
Portland. During these years, Shirlee attended college
and graduated with a “Dietetic Technician” degree.
While pastoring, Shirlee has been at my side to love and
support me for the sixty four years of our married life and
forty years in the pastorate. She has been a wise model
of a pastor’s wife and a fantastic mother to our children.
Following my retirement in 1997, we continued to live in
our home in South West Portland and in 2016, we
realized in was time to make a change in life style. One
of the wisest decisions we ever made together was to
move to Courtyard Village, and we did just that on March
22, 2017! We love living at Courtyard Village in this
caring family atmosphere where we feel both physically
and intellectually challenged. It is so right for us!!
