Mr Richard MagnusChairmanHuman Capital (Singapore) Pte LtdManagement Board
As a country and nation, Singapore achieved first-world status within 50 years of her independence. Enterprises here have benefited
tremendously from the strong economic infrastructure as well as the open economy that has promoted free trade.
The tie-up with Georgetown University’s two prestigious schools, the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and the McDonough School of Business, will set high standards and raise the bar for continuing education and training of PMEs in Singapore.
A programme which combines academic learning with practice-based applications will allow newly-acquired relevant skill sets and knowledge to directly impact business outcomes. This programme promises to be different in the content it offers.
Four years ago, Georgetown University and HCS started an exploratory journey and little did each party know at that time that this programme would commence in a timely fashion to support Singapore’s future growth. But, what was certain even back then was the spirit of determination to face challenges, discover new pathways and seek breakthroughs in mind-sets. This programme embodies the values of practice-based learning and making a difference through collaboration with the industry-at-large.
This collaborative approach of learning and putting it into practice sees industry players forging ties with HCS and Georgetown University to see learning directly impact the workplace and businesses. Changi Airport Group and SATS, Singapore’s flagship companies are amongst the first cohort of companies to collaborate in this future-skills learning journey.
Together, we would like to express our gratitude to all stakeholders for coming on-board this inaugural APQ programme for PMEs.

Human Capital Singapore is privileged to partner world-renowned higher-education institution Georgetown University in launching Singapore’s first Advanced Professional Qualification (APQ) in
Global Business Leadership and International Relations. This programme will support the SkillsFuture Singapore programme that is set to chart Singapore’s economic restructuring and transformation.
This inaugural cohort of enterprise leaders will be equipped with current, relevant and practical skill-sets and knowledge that will enable these change-makers to set future business trends and take the lead in transforming their businesses to build a future ecosystem that is critical for Singapore’s growth and sustainability in the global economy.
As Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives will increasingly pursue evidence-based outcomes, this programme will make its debut in the first matrix that will track such outcomes to impact change and transformation for productivity growth through global business leadership and internationalization.
It is highly encouraging to witness this inaugural cohort of “SG50” enterprise leaders embarking on such a watershed programme. In time to come, I am confident that this cohort of enterprise leaders will make a significant difference to the Singapore and global business scene.

As Academic Director, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the GU-HCS APQ in Global Business Leadership and International Relations program. Under the visionary leadership of Human Capital Singapore, we have created an experiential learning opportunity for SME bosses looking to take the next step in “going global.” In line with Singapore’s 50th anniversary, and the Government’s 2020 vision for its workforce, Georgetown has assembled a distinguished faculty to help you make the jump from running an SME to leading Singapore’s next MNC. I am very excited to begin this program with you, and look forward to welcoming you to the Georgetown community.

This round of lessons and the trip to Georgetown University in America have been, to say the least, of immense benefit. Most importantly, we had learnt from such reputed professors with years of professional experience under their belt; ample opportunities to interact in pleasant
settings with other entrepreneurs who also engage in very senior roles. I would say I have absolutely no regrets and that the time and money spent on this trip have been well worth it.
Globalization is the defining phenomenon of the 21st century. It has caused every nation to open up, there are no closed doors nor separation now. It is thus essential to adopt a win-win situation in our business dealings. We have to also diligently learn and amass knowledge of other countries; their political, economic policies, legal systems and culture etc. The benefit of knowing such details is that it helps us to evaluate the situation, and make sound, informed business strategies. During the course, professors used many real business examples for illustration and analysis, compelling us to think deeper and enhance the potential opportunities lying in wait for us if we just dared to venture out; our perspective has also widened and we look at challenges from a much broader and higher view now.
Data science is the other trend of the 21st century, known for its ever accelerating speed of changes. Only with a firm grasp of data - not based on gut feelings or hunches - will we be able to prepare for the next two years and beyond of changes. The best way to have a firm grasp of data is really to learn assiduously, to enrich ourselves daily, to enlarge and renew our knowledge. This way, we would be able to improve and be flexible and open to all changes, challenges and developments in the business landscape.
A professor had shared an aphorism from Sun Tzu during class ‘Know thyself, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories’ and emphasized its significance. They say the person at the wheel must know how to control the steering, if not, then do not drive! The professor taught us to brainstorm daily, also to meditate weekly on whether one is going in the desired direction, and whether there is any aspect for improvement.Lastly, I’d like to share a famous quote “In ice hockey, they don’t teach you to skate towards the puck, but where it is going next”.

TESTIMONIALS
I feel that this course is extremely useful for entrepreneurs or business managers who wish to expand their enterprises abroad. For entrepreneurs yet to develop foreign markets, this course will prepare, and widen their horizons with the depth of the global perspectives imparted to enter the international market in the future. The professors’ deliveries are based on solid theoretical foundations and rich practical experience, coupled with current information. Lessons are also lively and engaging, with many opportunities for interesting discussions. I learned much more than I expected.
In the process of developing foreign markets, it is imperative to understand the market’s culture, traditions, mentality and various nuances of expressions. I learned it is not wise to judge based on our own background and experiences. I was also impressed by their methods of evaluating staff performance, which is crucial. It is necessary to provide staff with more resources when preparing them for larger roles; however staff should not have so much resource as to render them unable to innovate and find creative solutions. American companies are characterized by their great emphasis on innovation and branding, I think their competitive strategies and mindset is something Singapore entrepreneur can learn from.
– Dr Dora Hoan Beng MuiFounder and Co-Chairman
Best World International Ltd
First of all I would like to express my appreciation to Madam Ho Geok Choo, for giving me an invaluable opportunity to study in a prestigious university from great professors. I was most impressed by the discussions on globalization, though my business has not reached this phase, I am at least equipped with knowledge and able to share with friends.
In Shenzhen, I remember the professor named four priorities: first, branding. Branding is one of the important aspects of business. Second, service. We think of “service” as customer service, but we lack a complete service system. Third, profits. Profit is what sustains an organization and moves it forward. Fourth, flexibility. Enterprises cannot be static, we need to continue to learn and grow, in order to maintain a competitive advantage.

This course has left a profound impression upon me. I learned the terms “high-context” and “low-context” from Professor Heino. Prof Arthur Dong has used Walmart’s case study to impart the essence of staying competitive: we learnt how large enterprises like Walmart capitalized on their fundamental advantages to strengthen the organization. Daily walks to the campus after breakfast brought me memories of my school years, which was wonderful! The professors were very earnest in their lesson deliveries. This was generally an excellent experience.
– Mr Andy Hoon Kee KiongDirector
Kim San Leng (Bukit Panjang) Pte Ltd
Engaging, insightful and thought provoking, the course is actually “more relevant than ever” and will alter how you think about global business and international relations. There is a good combination of the theory and practice and topics covered were in-depth. The course is well organized and trainers were very knowledgeable, well-prepared with lots of practical examples.

TESTIMONIALS
The delivery of lesson content was really practical - an apparently dry concept was broken down and made accessible through specially designed class activities. For example, professors used practical instances to demonstrate what is negotiation and its strategies. On top of imparting knowledge of business management and development, the professors have also inspired us to see the world from a wide universal perspective, so that we do not approach challenges with a narrow vision.
This journey has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. The trip to Washington goes beyond mere classroom learning. Outside class, we had the opportunity to also know American culture and values; to interact and exchange ideas and experiences with course mates and other like-minded Chinese businessmen and women on a deeper level.
What I have gained from this trip surpasses my expectations. The benefits have come timely as my company is in the midst of undergoing reforms. At the start I was hesitant and feeling lost when business consultants proposed changes to our reform project, but empowered now with my new-found knowledge, I feel I am able to support them. If I hadn’t enrolled for this course, I might have been doubtful about reforming the company.
Western management principles tend to emphasize on robust methods, techniques, measurement and evaluation, over theories and ideologies. In contrast, Chinese or Asian businesses tend to make decisions based on gut and emotions, if a decision is even made at all. After this course, I understand why our government goes to great lengths to support SMEs in upgrading their skills, to empower these organisations to adapt in the ever-changing business landscape.
– Madam Ang Soo BuayManaging Director
Superskill Graphics Pte Ltd
This course has been beneficial for my company as SWISSCO is an international company with businesses around the world. This course is relevant to people who want to move beyond Singapore. The professors highlighted many concerns such as different cultures, type of people, high-context and low-context language that companies will face if they want to expand overseas. Also, some of the solutions provided by the professors are very helpful. For Swissco, we have already gone international. This course underlines what we already face; reminds us of some of the problems we can potentially face or have faced. For companies who want to expand overseas, this course will provide them with very good fundamentals for them to understand and prepare for the challenges they may face.

The learning journey at Georgetown University (GU) has given me exposure to the organisation, facilities and people of the university –all of which are much better and more professional than I have imagined. I was most impressed by the Talent Management course. It is well known that SMEs faced with Human Resource Management issues, and I am always thinking of how to retain talent in my company. I will be applying what I have learnt in the course to my company.
