Stewardship
A Way of Life
This Week’s Readings
When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend
Lazarus, He responded, “This illness is not to end in
death; rather it is for God’s glory, that through it the
Son of God may be glorified.” Every aspect of our lives
- gifts as well as sufferings - can, if surrendered to
Christ, lead to blessings for ourselves and others.
Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
who labor not for their own benefit, but so that others
may see their good works and give glory to our Father.

Abstinence and Fasting
All Catholics who have reached their 14th
birthday are bound to abstain entirely from
meat on Ash Wednesday and all the
Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the
ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound
to observe the laws of fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting
means limiting oneself to a single full meal
and avoiding food between meals.
Two other light meals, which together
do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.
Dynamic Catholic’s Best Lent Ever
There’s still time to make this your Best Lent Ever. St. Agnes
parishioners are invited to join Dynamic Catholic for Best Lent
Ever, a free email program designed to help you have a life
changing Lent. You will get short inspirational videos, practical
tips, and a study guide. Based on Matthew Kelly’s latest book,
Resisting Happiness, this year’s program will help you identify what stands between
you and happiness...and what to do about it. Sign up at www.bestlentever.com.
Stations
of the Cross
You are invited to join us
in the Cathedral at 7:30 p.m.
this Friday, April 7th
to remember Christ’s passion and
death by praying
the Stations of the
Cross.
As part of your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we invite you to make
a sacrificial offering to St. Clement Catholic Church in Nuaso, in the eastern
region of Ghana. This church is in the home village of Fr. Seth Awo-Doku. It
has been under construction but is not completed due to financial difficulties.
Your donation will help complete the church, or in the very least, finance the
installation of a roof. Weekly donations can be put aside by your family and
saved until the end of Lent or you can make a donation anytime.
Envelopes are available in the Cathedral and rectory office. You may return
the envelope along with your check made payable to St. Agnes Cathedral by
dropping it in the regular collection basket any Sunday or by returning it to
the rectory office. Please be sure to write “St. Clement, Ghana” on the
memo line. Thank you for assisting us in this project.

We Are Looking for New
R.C.I.A. Team Members
We have been so blessed here at St. Agnes by the
generosity of those parishioners who have devoted
their time to being an RCIA team member. The job
description is pretty simple: show up (as often as
possible) to our weekly Sunday meetings and be open
to making new friends in Christ. You don’t need to be
a theologian or “super holy”. You do have to be
someone who is practicing the faith and who is open
to sharing your experiences of being a Catholic
Christian in a small group setting. Some team
members lead the candidates in reflecting on the
readings of Mass. Others are catechists who teach a
lesson once every few weeks. Others just share their
own journey, help with refreshments, or serve as
sponsors. Many have found it to be a rewarding
experience, not only because of the relationships that
are formed but because they get to renew their own
understanding of why they are so blessed to be
Catholic. This process is a spiritual renewal for all
involved. If you are interested in joining the team,
please call Dr. Jo-Ann Metzdorff at (516) 678-2306
for more information.
Level 2 Religious
Education
The Level 2 gathering for
Religious Education students
preparing to receive First Holy
Communion is this Thursday
afternoon, April 6th at 4:00, 5:15 or 6:30 p.m. in
the Parish Center. In order to make things easier for
the children to complete their project and learn
about what will happen on their First Communion
day, we ask that those whose last names begin with
A-F come to the 4:00 p.m. session, G-M to the
5:15 p.m. session and M-Z to the 6:30 p.m.
session. For any changes please call the Religious
Education Office at (516) 678-2306.
Joining the
Catholic Church
Each year on Holy Saturday
during the Easter Vigil,
thousands of men and women
throughout the world are
received into the Catholic
Church. Parishes welcome and prepare these new
members through the Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA). RCIA is a formation program to
help non-Catholics understand and experience the
teachings and practices of the Catholic Church. This
year we have seven people who will be receiving
their Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist at
the Easter Vigil. At the vigil of Pentecost on
June 3rd, a number of baptized Christians will be
received into the Catholic Church and some
baptized Catholics will complete their initiation by
receiving Confirmation. New inquirers are invited to
join in the process at any time to prepare to receive
their sacraments in 2018. It is usually a one year
process for those needing baptism, but it could be
shorter for those coming to the faith from another
Christian community. We meet on Sundays at the
11:00 a.m. Mass and after until about 1:15 p.m.
If you or someone you know might be interested
please call the Religious Education Office at
(516) 678-2306.

PASTORAL COUNCIL QUESTIONNAIRE
Dear Parishioner, As members of the Pastoral Council, we serve "as a forum of consultation for the pastor by
engaging the council members in an ongoing dialogue about the needs, feelings, hopes and
reactions of parishioners." While it is not our role to make specific decisions on the Pastoral
Life of the Parish, our interaction and counsel help to "foster the process of pastoral planning
and decisions, in the light of the parish mission and vision."
To this end, we invite you and all members of your household to take a few minutes and give feedback
on some of the areas of Parish Life. Please return by mail, drop in the Sunday Collection Basket, or
complete the questionnaire online via Survey Monkey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/

13 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Dear Friends:
It has been a great gift for me to have been named your Bishop and I am humbled and filled with
gratitude for the support and welcome that you have shared with me. During these initial visits
with our parishes, schools and ministries, I have enjoyed being able to meet so many of you and
I look forward to continuing to connect with, and serve, all of our people in the coming months
and years ahead.
What I have repeatedly heard is how much you all love and care for our church; I know that
together we will continue to dedicate our lives to Jesus and the mission of the Catholic Church.
It is during this Lenten season that we are especially reminded of Pope Francis’ words that,
“Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel and the Church’s Mission.” Our local Catholic
Ministries Appeal is a wonderful way for each of us to hear and respond to His Holiness’
message.
With one donation, the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal allows each of us to help a wide
variety of people as it supports our church’s efforts in evangelization, liturgy and worship. It
enables the continuation and growth of our youth and young adult ministries and cares for our
poor and disadvantaged neighbors. It also supports religious education programs and the
formation and vocations for our Seminarians and our Deacons.
This Lent, I ask that you join with me in supporting our Mission of Mercy by contributing to the
Catholic Ministries Appeal. My own sincere thanks will be joined to the gratitude of more than
600,000 people who will benefit deeply for your kindness and generosity.
Thank you for all that you do and know that I look forward to walking with you on this journey
as we work together to help build God’s Kingdom in our community and beyond.
I will keep you and your family in my Masses and prayers.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend John O. Barres
Bishop of Rockville Centre
14 April 2, 2017
Estimados amigos,
A mi sincero
