Health Education

Definition of Health Education:

•‘Health education is a process that informs, motivate and helps

people to adopt and maintain healthy practices and lifestyles, advocate

environmental changes as needed to facilitate this goal and conducts

professional training and research to the same end’.

Objectives of Health Education:Informing people or disseminate scientific knowledge about prevention of disease and promotion of health.

Motivating people is more important than informing because simply telling the people about health is not enough.

Guiding into action: health education should be conducted by a variety of health, education and communication personnel in a variety of settings starting with the physician.

Stages of People Adoption of new ideas and practices

1. Awareness 2. Interest 3. Evaluation4. Trial 5. Adoption stage

Content of Health Education sessions1. Human biology.2. Nutrition. 3. Hygiene.4. Family health care. 5. Control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.6. Mental Health. 7. Prevention of Accidents at home, road and place of work.8. Use of Health services and to participate in the national programs.

Principles of Health education:1. Interest2. Participation is the keyword in health education 3. Known to unknown: means start where the people are and with what they

understand preceded to the knowledge and in this way systematic knowledge is built up.

4. Comprehension5. Reinforcement6. Motivation is awaking the desire to learn. 7. Learning by doing: Learning itself is an action.8. Soil, seed and power: The people are the soil, the health facts are the seeds

and the transmitting media is the power.9. Good human relations are important in learning.10. Leaders: we learn the best from people we respect and regard.

Communication in Health Education:

1- Communicator which is the originator of the message.

2- Message

3- Audience, the consumers of the message.

4-Channels of communication which must be carefully selected

particularly its cost and availability.

Methods and techniques ( Practice of Health Education ):

1- Individual and family health education:• Personal : Interviews – Consultation ( Counselling )

2- Group health education:

i.e. Two Ways Method.

3- Mass media health education (Education of the general public)

Useful Method because it reaches a huge number of populations.

2- Group health education: i.e. Two Ways Method. a- Lectures

b- Group discussions which is a two way communication

c- Panel discussions: a group of 4-8 persons talk about the topic and discuss it in front of a group of

audience.

d- Symposium which is a series of speeches on a selected subject.

e- Workshop used in case of a novel experiment in education

f- Role playing, the group members who enact their roles as they have observed or experienced them.

g- Practical demonstration.

h- Simulation exercises.
