Wefollowacomprehensiveschoolhealthapproachandbelievethatcreatingahealthyschoolenvironmentisanidealwaytopositivelyaffectstudents’healthattitudesandbehaviours.

Wearecommittedtosupportingschoolcommunitiesincreatinghealthyschoolenvironments.Weofferavarietyofprogramsandinitiatives:•providingrecommendationstosupportthe healthandphysicaleducationcurriculumin classrooms•providingsupportforschoolcouncilhealth promotioninitiatives•deliveringworkshops•providingsupportfordevelopmentor revisionofschoolproceduresandpolicies.

Yourhealthyschoolspublichealthnursecanprovidetrainingtostudentleaderstoorganizeandrunplaygroundgamesduringrecess.Theemphasisisoninclusion,safety,participationandfun.

Schoolsaregivenleadervests,aplaygroundbinderwithgameideasandcertificatesforthepeerleaders.

Thistoolkit,completewithpedometers,suggestedlessonplansandtrackingsheets,isapositivewaytochallengestudentstobemoreactive.Yourpublichealthnursewillprovidesupporttokickofftheprogram.

Apresentationbythepublichealthnursewithassistancefromtheteacherbasedonthe“BrainDay”programcreatedbyParachuteCanada.Activitiesincludelearningaboutneuronsandbrainanatomy,functionsofthebrain,protectingthebrain,concussionsandhelmetsafety.

bikE RodEo (Grade4) Thistwo-partworkshophasaclassroomandcyclingskillssection.Theclassroomsectiondiscussessafetyincludinghelmetandbikefit,safetyandmore.Thecyclingskillssectionhasagroupofsafecyclinginstructorscometoyourschooltoworkwithstudentstolearncyclingskillsincludingbalance,gearing,straight-lineriding,shoulderchecking,signaling,brakingandstopping,corneringandmaneuvering.Thegroupisthentakenontoaplannedroadroutetopracticealloftheskillslearned.Thereisacostinvolvedforthesafecyclinginstructors.

A90minuteinteractiveworkshopencouragingfemalestudentstoexplorehowimagesinthemediainfluencehowweseeourselvesandothers.Participantscreateaffirmingpostcardstohelpgirlsappreciatethemselvesandtheirbodies.

ThunderBayDistrictHealthUnitandSt.Joseph’sCareGroup–RegionalEatingDisordersProgramhavepartneredtoformalocalregisteredDressingRoomProjectActionTeamthatispartofaglobal,positivebodyimageinitiativecreatedbyEmergingWomenProjects.

HealthyBuddies©isa21weekpeer-to-peereducationprogramthatempowerselementaryschoolchildrentolivehealthierlives.Thefocusisonhealthyeating,physicalactivityandpositiveself-image.Intermediatestudentsaretaughtthecontentandtheyteachtheprimarystudentstheyarepairedwith.ThisprogramisconsistentwiththeOntarioHealthandPhysicalEducationcurriculum.
