Penetrant testing (PT), how it works
The penetrant method of non-destructive testing is based on capillary penetration of indicator
liquid (penetrant) into the surface defects (cracks, pores etc.). After intermediate cleaning and
subsequent drying, a developer is applied as a thin, white layer onto the surface to be
inspected. The developer pulls the penetrant out of the surface defects and makes themvisible as coloured, linear or rounded indications. Documentation is possible by means of
adhersive foil, photographic or video techniques.

Test panelsSensitivity of inspection media, quality of intermediate cleaning and control of the whole penetrant
process are determined on reference blocks, i.e. on metal panels with defined roughness and provided
with standardized artificial cracks(defects).
Test panel ASME V
Used for the testing of the penetrants indication sensitivity. Due to thedivision of the test panel into two parts, it is possible to compare 2 differentpenetrants.Present test panel is an aluminium plate (805010 mm), divided by a notch(5021,5 mm), into two parts. Because of a special thermal treatment
ASME panel, there is a uniform crack pattern, which is visible on both sidesof the test panel.
Indication of cracks by using of system
NORD-TEST (U87, Rot 3000, U89)
Test body 2 (EN ISO 3452-3)
The reference block 2 consists of an austenitic base plate, which is chromium-
plated on one side and provided with 4 different surface roughnesses on the otherside. 5 star-shaped crack patterns of different sizes are generated in the chromium-
plated side by applying a pressure load to the rear side with a ball. The rough areas
are used for control of the intermediate rinse step. The indication on the referenceblock gives no suggestion of the indication on the part under test. The user uses the
reference block for the control of inspection material. For checking the rinsability
of penetrants four adjacent areas sized 25 x 35 mm are placed on one half of thepanel with roughness of Ra = 2,5 m, Ra = 5 m, Ra = 10 m and Ra = 15 m. The
defect area is located on the other half of the test surface of the panel. The size ofeach defect is determined optically at its maximum diameter using calibrated scales
Reference block1 (EN ISO 3452-3)
The type 1 reference block consists of a set of 4 nickel-chrome plated panels with10, 20, 30 and 50 m thickness of plating respectively.
The 10, 20 and 30 m panels are used for determination of the sensitivity of
fluorescent penetrant systems. The sensitivity of colour contrast penetrant systems is determined by using the 30
and 50 m panels.
The type 1 panels are rectangular in shape with typical dimensions of 35 x 100 x 2mm Transverse cracks are made in each panel by stretching the panels in the
longitudinal direction. The width to depth ratio of each crack should be
approximately 1:20.
A declaration stating conformance to EN ISO 3452-3 and in line with EN 10204,
Type 3.1 B shall accompany each test block.
Test body JIS Z 2343
Used to determine the sensitivity of penetrant systems and for comparingtwo penetrants, one of which can be taken for standard. Consists of two testpanels which are bronze planes 100352 mm , covered with NiCr-layer. InNiCr-blanket. Crosscut cracks are made, depth of which fits the width of theNiCr-blanket. (Designed in 4 types 10, 20, 30 & 50 m). The quotient ofcracks width to their depth equals 1:20. Each test-panel has a certificateaccording to EN 10204, type 3.1 B, which verifies its aptitude to EN ISO3452-3. Test-panels with cracks width of 10 m, 20 m, 30 m used for afluorescent sensitivity testing penetrant systems. The sensitivity of contrastpenetrant systems is determined by means of panels, depth of cracks inwhich - 30 and 50 m.

Magnetic particle testing
The magnetic particle testing method (MT) is one of the most sensitive, reliable and productive NDT-method forsurface inspection of products from ferro-magnetic materials. The method is based on the attraction of ferro-magnetic particles by force of leakage flux like cracks, laps, leak of fusion, pores which appear above surfacedefects after adequate magnetization. MT can be used for surface defects (open to the surface) and under certain
conditions for detection of near-surface defects. Higher probability of detection is given, when the direction of adefect is perpendicular to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The smaller the angle between defect andfield direction the weaker the indication
Microscope imaging of cracks Cracks indication by fluorescentT method
Magnetic Particle testing is used in almost every industry branch:metallurgy, machine building, aircraft building, shipbuilding, during production in steelworks, at pipe
installation), electric power and chemical machine building, Means of transportation (aircrafts, rail cars, vehicles).Magnetic Particle testing procedure consists of the following: 1 Preparation of the items` surfaces of the testobjects for testing, 2 magnetization of the object, 3 application of magnetic particle suspension onto the testobject 4 Testing of the object, 5 demagnetization.
Circular, longitudinal and combined magnetization are used for MT. There are a lot of magnetization schemes, some of which are shown below.

Reference Blocks/Field Indicators
Magnetic field direction
Magnetic field direction
Reference block 2 (EN ISO 9934-2)Reference block is a self contained unit requiring no external magnetic fieldinduction. Used to determine the quality of the magnetic particlesuspensions. The block consists of 2 soft iron bars, separated by a thin(15m) Al-foil, representing an artificial defect. Permanent magnets are seton the sample ends. Because of the permanent magnetic field the bars getmagnetized and magnetic particles accumulate over the artificial defect, forming indicator lines. The quality of the suspension or dry powder isestimated over the summarized the length of the lines.
Specifications:Dimensions (LWH): 1554012 mmTangential component of magnetic fieldover the artificial defect at points G (-4): -1/m
(4): 1/cm
Reference block 1 (EN ISO 9934-2)The reference block is a disc with 2 types of natural cracks on the surface.Coarse cracks are the result of the polishing, fine cracks are the result ofstress corrosion. The block is permanently magnetized by centralconductor through the hole. Estimation of magnetic particle suspensions ismade by visual or other appropriated method of comparison of theindications.
Specifications:Sample diameter: 50 mmSample height: 10 mmThe width of cracks: 2-10 m
Field Indicator according to BertholdDesigned to determine the strength and direction of the selectedmagnetizing setup and the quality of magnetic powder suspension.

Magnetic Field Indicator D 250 (ASME-V)The magnetic field indicator type D 250 is designed in accordance with thefollowing specification methods of non destructive testing :MIL-STD-271 E, 4.3.2.5.5, figure 8NAVSHIPS 250-1500-1, 12.4.1.5, figure 12 17
ASME, section V, Art. 25, SA-275, figure 8The sample is used for localization of magnetic fields and their directionsduring performance of magnetic particle testing.
Specifications:Sample diameter: 27 mmSample height: 4 mmHolder length: 100 mmWeight: 42 g.
Ketos Ring (ASTM E 1444-01)The sample is designed to determine the defectoscope working capacityand the quality of magnetic powder suspension. The sample representsitself a 7/8"(22,2mm)-wide disk. Outer diameter 5"(127mm), inner diameter1,25"(31,75mm) - made from steel AISI 01.12 holes (diameter 0,07" (1,78mm) are placed on different distances fromthe outer cylindrical surface. When current (FWDC or HWDC) is passedthrough the central conductor, (conductor diameter 1 3/16 , conductor
length mustnt be less then 400mm), waste fields appear, decreasing asthe distance from the hole to the outer cylindrical surface increases. Whenthe magnetic suspension is applied on the disk, magnetic powderaccumulates over the cylindrical surface holes, forming indicator lines. The process, corresponding to the recovery of the majority of lines isaccepted as optimal.

Leak inspection
Bubble methodThe essential matter of the method is as follows:
Registration of local leakages in an under-test item by appearing of indicator gas bubbles in indicator liquid(indicator cover). The method is used for testing the impermeability of reservoirs welded joint, fluid power andgas systems under the overpressure,(which can be created by vacuum pump).Foam-film indicator(Proof Check) is applied on the under-test joint weld and overpressure is generated. Air(check gas), penetrating through the joint weld microflaws, impacts mechanically on foam-film indicator, accumulating on the defective place, deforms it. In this case bubbles or foam swelling can be seen .

An ultra-fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class I film having excellent sharpness and high discrimination characteristics. Itis suitable for use with any low atomic number material where fine image detail is imperative. Its ultra-fine grain makes ituseful in high energy, low subject contrast applications where high curie isotopes or high output X-ray machines permit itsuse. Wide exposure latitude has been demonstrated in high subject contrast applications.IX50 is generally used in directexposure techniques or with lead screens.
IX 80An extremely fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class Ifilm suitable for detection of minute defects. It is applicable to theinspection of low atomic number materials with low kilovoltage X-ray sources as well as inspection of higher atomicnumber materials with high kilovoltage X-ray or gamma ray sources. Wide exposure latitude has been demonstrated inhigh subject contrast applications. IX80 is generally used in direct exposure techniques or with lead screens.
IX 100A very fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class II film suitable for the inspection of light metals with low activity radiationsources and for inspection of thick, higher density specimens with high kilovoltage X-ray or gamma ray sources. Wideexposure latitude has been demonstrated in high contrast subject applications. Although IX100 is generally used in directexposure techniques or with lead screens, it is suitable for use with fluorescent or fluorometallic screens.
IX 150A high speed, fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class III film suitable for inspection of a large variety of specimens with low-to-high kilovoltage X-ray and gamma ray sources. Ultrasonic resonance spectroscopy (URS) utilizes information in the
frequency domain obtained due to the constructive and destructiveinterference of elastic waves for nondestructive evaluation of
inspected objects. In a resonance test an ultrasonic tone-burst with
sweeping frequency is applied to an ultrasonic transducer and aresonance spectrum of the inspected structure is acquired. The
acquired spectrum contains information about the properties of
materials used for the structure and flaws that may be present in it.
Measurement setup: Narrowband ultrasonic spectroscopy can be
used for the NDT of aerospace multi-layered structures. The INT-Bond-Tester used for this test operate on the principle of exciting a
mechanical resonance in a multi-layered structure. A piezoelectric
probe, excited by a swept frequency signal is coupled to the surface
of the inspected structure using a coupling agent. The instrumentacquires probes frequency spectrum in the range of some tens of
kHz to several hundreds of kHz. A resonance in the layered structure
occurs when echoes between two boundaries travel back and forth
due to the difference in acoustic impedances at the boundaries.
