Lesson One Herbology is the study of and proper use

of both magical and mundane plants for medicinal, protective, or educational purposes.

Covers – Herbology safety, the benefits of dragon dung, mooncalf dung, & centaur tears.

reach their full potential

Habitats & Lifestyle A new habitat can create a new strain of

Lesson Three Basic Herbs & Fungi

Gillyweed

Gillyweed Rare Herb native to the Mediterranean

Sea Grows 5 to 7 centimeters Soil pH range of 7.9 – 8.4 Consumes large amounts of water Needs little sunlight

Valerian Root

Valerian Root Herb, native to Europe and some parts of

Asia Possesses sedative powers Used in many sleeping potions May grow to be five feet tall Needs at least seven hours of sunlight Soil pH level – 4.5 – 5.0 Harvested in the fall Keep away from cats!

Knotgrass

Rare Herb native to the Mediterranean Sea Grows to

Knotgrass Native to European forests Can be 5 centimeters – 4 meters tall Soil pH level 6.1 – 7.3 Needs lots of water The more sunlight it gets, the more it

grows

Dittany

Dittany Native to the island of Crete Is used in curing many types of ailments Grows 20 centimeters Needs warmth and sunlight Soil pH level – 6.6 – 7.3 Be careful not to give too much water!

Lesson Four Dangerous plants

The Mandrake

The Mandrake Common to European countries Grows above ground 5 centimeters – 40

centimeters Grows well where people have been

Devil’s Snare

Devil’s Snare Native to Scotland Grows in dark, damp areas Swaying tendrils & vivid green color Used to guard objects, assassinate, or

struggle If you can reach your wand use a spell

to bring about heat and light Relaxing will cause the plant to release

Bubotuber

Bubotuber Native to Scotland Resembles a giant black slug Plant in dark, nutrient rich soil Requires very little sunlight Can withstand cold temperatures

Bubotuber – First Aid Clean wound for five minutes with cold

water Apply dittany Take pain potion

Lesson Five Rat Root

Acorus calamus – Rat Root Reed like perennial plant Grows to a height of about one meter Must be watered every two-three days Sunlight is a must Strongly scented leaves Bitter taste

Rat root uses Sweet smell makes for excellent floor

diseases Powder can clear a cough

Lesson Six Advanced Herbology

Bouncing Bulb

Bouncing Bulb Magical plant Will jump around when not restrained Can attack anyone that is deemed as

threatening Soil pH level should be neutral Use centaur tears when watering

Gurdyroot

Gurdyroot Foul scent Can grow in many places Soil must be full of nutirents Can grow to be fifteen centimeters in

diameter Bugs will attack gurdyroot, guard with a

protective spell

Aconite

Aconite Grows in forests and mountain regions Use dark, fluffy, nutritious soil Thrives in shady areas Very poisonous Always wear your dragon-hide gloves Can cause instant death in large doses

Wormwood

Wormwood Common throughout Europe Grows to a height of 1-2 meters Prefers salty water Used in potions to treat fevers, and

other diseases Leaves and flowers can be used to treat

insect bites

Lesson Seven Non-Magical Plants

Lilies

Lilies Mundane plant Flowers come in several colors Use nutrient rich soil Needs five to six hours of sunlight Use regular water Has many health properties – treating

burns, wounds, sores, etc… Scent can cause happiness

English Rose

English Rose Can grow from one to twenty feet Needs partial to full sunlight Soil pH level – 5.5 – 7.0 Many colors of flowers Needs lots of water Has many medicinal uses

Lesson Eight Challenges in Herbology

The Gardening Effect Lack of funding due to public’s decline

in interest of Herbology There are more “respectable fields” for

young witches and wizards to join Herbologists make less money

Alien Species Any type of plant living in a non-native

habitat is an alien species Alien species can be harmful to the

habitat that it lives in Can overwhelm the ecosystem Can kill the native plants
