Pall SCHUMACHER Offers Intelli-gent Solutions for Water andWaste Water Treatment
Fine Bubble Aeration for Bio-logical Sewage Treatment
As the value and therefore the cost ofwater increases, and as environmentalregulations for wastewater dischargebecome more stringent, more and moremunicipal and industrial customers decideto treat their waste water as efficiently andas economical as possible.
To meet these strict requirements, PallSchumacher utilises many decades ofextensive application know how, and anenormous reference based range of experi-ence to offer the following HIGHLIGHTS:
Pall Schumacher has a well defined mis-sion: To use its many years of experienceand know how to realize integrated andoptimised solutions to the benefit of itscustomers and the environment. As a resultof many decades in the field of bio-logical sewage treatment plants, PallSchumacher is best positioned to create theoptimum solution and to deal with thewidest variety of applications.
Based on the operating results from morethan 1,000 reference plants, PallSchumacher has fine tuned and optimiseddiffuser geometry to offer a proven design, guaranteed to give successful operation fornitrification, denitrification and organicdestruction (including BOD/COD reduction).
Pall Schumacher has manufactured spe-
cialised porous media used for aerationsince delivery of the first diffuser elements in1918. Over many decades PallSchumacher has developed an optimisedcylindrical diffuser - in close operation withUniversities and Institutes to fulfill alldemands for advanced biological wastewater treatment for today - and tomorrow. For generating the optimum ambient condi-tions for biological action, and to ensure aconstant and safe operation, PallSchumacher offers an excellently uniformdistribution of fine air bubbles using cylindri-cal diffusers in flat bottom aeration techni-que in continuously operated sewage treat-ment tanks.

Pall Schumacher hasa very wide range of
experience, both in the supply of largecentralised municipal sewage treatmentplant, eg. the installation of 35,000 m
BRANDOL® - diffusers in a large centrali-sed municipal plant as well as the installa-tion of a number of smaller 100 m in de-centralised plants.
Customers having chosen BRANDOL®
for their sewage aeration, made the deci-sion based on its excellent functionality, aswell as the very rigid and wear resistantnature of the porous ceramic diffusers:Enduring, continuous and efficient opera-
tion are the significant features, ensu-ring long-evity in service. Our customers often enjoy>20 years of efficient andtrouble free operationusing our BRANDOL® dif-fusers.This proven service historymeans minimum spare
parts investment and a vast-ly reduced need for changing the
diffusers over the years.
The BRANDOL® ceramic consists of aporous material composed of naturallyspherical quartz particles bonded with asynthetic resin. This porous medium has asmooth inner pore structure and becauseof the chemical properties of the resin, exhibits a natural bacteriostatic activity[against the growth of algae by activatedsludge]. The smooth round structure alsohelps to reduce clogging, giving low pres-sure drops and minimised operating-costs.
A very effective cleaning of the diffuserscan be carried out by high pressure clea-ning if required.

The Process:
The Original:BRANDOL®
The self-cleaning of water, effected bymicro-organisms, is a permanent proce-dure always running in free nature. In eachmountain brook, the water becomes richerin oxygen continuously by its flow, andthus cleans itself.
Repeating natural procedurescontinuously.
The only additive: Clean AirWaste water contains a range of chemi-
cals, organic substances and nitrogencompounds. The objective of the treatmentis to remove these and to discharge the cla-rified water back into the natural waters orto reuse it after additional UF/RO-treat-ment. Flat bottom aeration with BRANDOL®
runs continuously without interruption.Ordinary air is injected into the diffuser ele-ments which are installed at a distance ofapprox. 20 cm from the bottom of thewaste water tank generating enough turbu-lance to avoid sludge deposition.
Rigid porous ceramic diffusers of typeBRANDOL® have a defined pore size to ensu-re specified oxygen flow through the wastewater at a low pressure drop. The porous tex-ture of BRANDOL® generates millions of finebubbles enabling high mass transfer rates ofthe oxygen into the waste water (= oxygencapacity = OC). The individually fixed homo-
geneously distributed diffusers not onlyachieve locally high specific transfer rates, butalso act as mini-mixers which homogenisethe waste water and establish high turbulentflow and local vortexation achieving an excel-lent cleaning effect by establishing an opti-mum environment for microorganisms.

SCHUMASOIL®- is a porous High Mole-cular Weight Polyethylene well screendesigned to minimise flow resistance. Thisis achieved by providing an optimisedporosity up to 45 % which is uniformly dis-tributed along the well screen's entirelength. Maximised porosity, uniform poredistribution and a tightly controlled poresize, provide the user with the ability to
match flow characteristics of the wellscreen to that of the formation.Conventional slotted well screen has (atbest), an open surface area of between 5-15%, and is only effective in coarse grai-ned soils. Generally, slotted pipe exhibitsundesirable high entrance and exit veloci-ties, which can result in preferential flowand even cause fracturing within the formation. Premature clogging and break-through is also a well known and undesi-rable feature of using simple slotted pipee.g. in fine and sandy soils.
SCHUMASOIL® well screen exhibits anopen surface area of 25 - 36 % .In additi-on to use in conventional vertical waterreco- very wells, SCHUMASOIL® is anexcellent product for use in horizontalwells. The porosity of the material providesall the advantages of a filter pack, but ismuch easier to install due to its lightweight and flexibility. Today, several hun-dred wells in service are equipped withSCHUMASOIL® well screen.
When high compressivestrength is required,
SCHUMASOIL® isavailable as Type VBW
which has a built in reinforcement. Thisreinforcement increases the well screen'sresistance to collapse, making it an idealproduct to use in horizontal well installati-ons.
The SCHUMASIV product range coverspore sizes from 0.005 µm to 1.2 µm mee-ting the demands of a wide range of appli-cations. SCHUMASIV ceramic membranesoffer unique advantages compared to con-ventional polymer membranes e.g
High fluxExcellent mechanical-strengthLong life timeStrong backflushing capability
STUTTGARTER MASSE is a microporous
ceramic product formed of crushed grains,
available from 0,4 to 12 mm.
SCHUMAPOR B is a highly porous, siliceous
ceramic product in form of spheres or so called
pellets, in sizes of 3 to 16 mm. Due to a flexible
manufacturing process SCHUMAPOR B is also
available in tailor-made material composition for
extraordinary customer applications.
Applications:
Both materials are distinguished by high tem-
perature and abrasive resistance. They show a
high porosity as well as a high specific surface
which offers immobilisation of microorganisms.
A moistening of hydrophil bulk products with
e.g. catalytic fluids shows best results.

The Pall Schumacherbelt oil skimmer ensures
an effective and economic sepa-ration of non-emulsified oils and liquid fatsfrom liquid surfaces. The lower part of thevertically installed belt is completely
immersed in the liquid to be purified. Floa-ting oil and fat adhere to the revolving beltand are thus skimmed off from the liquidsurface. The oil and fat is wiped off closeto the drive pulley above.
