Lest we forget
In Flanders Fields Poem
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium

November Birthdays
In astrology, those born November 1–22 are the scorpions of Scorpio. Scorpios are passionate and assertive, yet they are also known to keep cool and calm. This composure makes them good, steadfast leaders and loyal and honest friends.
Those born between November 23–30 are centaur archers of Sagittarius. Archers are curious, energetic, and enjoy change, the restless travelers of the zodiac. They are funny and enthusiastic, cherishing freedom as their greatest treasure.

Wardrobe Change
As the temperatures have approached the
cooler side, we ask families and friends to
assist the residents in their semi-annual
wardrobe change. Please bring in the
warmer clothing and due to lack of space
we ask that the summer clothing go in
storage.
We do continue to do community
excursions during the cooler
weather/winter and so gloves, hats,
scarves, warm jackets and boots are a
requirement.
Please ensure these items are labeled, to
help prevent any mix ups.
Also In light of the Christmas season, we
would like to offer our labeling services to
you. If you do happen to purchase
clothing items and are sure that they
are the right size, we would be
happy to label them for you prior to
wrapping. The department is open
daily and is located on the lower
level. We encourage the labeling of
gifts prior to wrapping to help
ensure that these special items will
not be misplaced when they are
opened Christmas Day.
Thank you and happy shopping.
Thank You,
The Environmental Services Team
News and Notes Accreditation
Monday, November 4th, 2019 through to
Friday, November 8th, 2019
As you are aware, accreditation is taking
place from Monday, November 4th through
to Friday, November 8th, 2019.
Accreditation assesses an organization
against standards of excellence to identify
what is being done well and what needs
improvement with the goal of enhancing
quality and safety, reducing risk and
increasing efficiencies. This involves all
members of peopleCare team from owners,
staff, residents, families, and community
partners.
Dion Mouland is the Team Lead for the
Accreditation; he is surveying with Lori
Turcotte. Dion works in continuing care
system in Halifax, Nova Scotia, while Lori
works in long term care in the Niagara
Region.
Please help us in welcoming Dion and Lori
to the peopleCare Homes.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
the residents, families and team members
who have helped prepare for accreditation.
We look forward to providing details of the
outcome in December.

Dear Residents, Families and Loved Ones,
Accreditation is upon us and we are looking forward to our accreditation survey, which will take place
during the week of November 4. Surveyors will be on site at Hilltop on Thursday, November 7 in the
morning where they will meet residents, staff and families and assess various quality standards that must
be in place in order to be accredited. Thank you to all of our residents and families who have been
involved in helping us to prepare for this important event!
On October 30th, Hilltop Manor participated in our annual supervised fire evacuation drill with Cambridge
Fire Department. This exercise requires us to evacuate the residents from one section of our home to
another using minimal staffing levels like those on the night shift. We are timed for how long it takes to
evacuate the resident room where the fire originates, and then how long it takes to evacuate the rest of
the home area. These times are then compared against Ontario Fire Marshall standards for evacuation
times based on the type of building and whether or not it is sprinklered. Hilltop Manor is fully sprinklered.
We have traditionally scored very well, and this year was no exception. Our staff were able to evacuate
the room where the “fire” was in 2 minutes, which is less than half the standard time, and were able to
evacuate the entire wing in just 8 minutes, when the standard is 70 minutes. Thank you to those staff and
residents who participated in making this year’s test a success once again!
I am happy to share that we have hired a Director of Environmental Services, Carl Lindo and a Nursing
Staffing Manager, Jacklyn Appleby. Carl joins us with several years of experience in similar roles in Long
Term Care, Retirement and supportive housing. Carl also has a mechanical background and a wealth of
knowledge in building systems and engineering. Carl’s first day will be Monday, November 4. Please join
me in welcoming Carl to our team! Jacklyn joins us with experience as a certified PSW, human resources
assistant and recruitment associate. Jacklyn has a PSW certificate, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health
Administration with a minor in Leadership from Wilfrid Laurier University and a post-graduate certification
in Community and Social Service Management from Conestoga College. Her first day with us will be
Tuesday, November 12 and we look forward to having her as part of our team!
Finally, I would like to congratulate Mrunali Shah, our former Assistant Director of Food Services on her
promotion to Director of Food Services at Golden Years, another long term care home operated by
peopleCare Communities. Mrunali’s last day at Hilltop was October 23 and we congratulate her on her
well-deserved promotion.
Sincerely,
Mike Dickin
Executive Director
