TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

Total hip replacement, also called total hip arthroplasty, involves removing the diseased bone and cartilage and replacing it with orthopedic implants. In an arthritic hip, the damaged ball is replaced by a metal ball attached to a metal stem fitted into the femur and a plastic socket is implanted into the pelvis, replacing the damaged socket. It is done for disorders like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis, Avascular necrosis and other reasons as malignant bone.

Sketch Of Stem For Designing The stem

• Sketch of Stem & Head

Femoral Stem Model

• This femoral stem has:

1) Neck

2) Ridges

3) Flat shaft

It will be well fitted into the femoral cavity

FILLETS & MIRROR

Ridges & Grooves

•DEEP GROOVES•SMALL GROOVES

• DEEP GROOVES : Provides reliable stability to the stem

• SMALL GROOVES : It creates a bigger surface for an optimal mechanical fixation with the cement

TAPERED DISTAL TAIL

•  The Tapered distal stem is designed to wedge into the femoral medullary canal

• Tapering lessens the bending moment

• It transfers axial and bending forces

STEM HEAD

• It includes :• 1) NECK• 2) BALL

ACETABULAR CUP

GROOVES IN ACETABULAR CUP

• It enhances the cement fixation in the acetabular cavity

•  It resists rotation of the cup in the cement mantle after implantation

MATERIALS

• CoCrMo (cobalt chromium molybedunum) for cemented stem

• CoCrMo for head

• PolyEthylene(PE) for cup
