HISTORYAND EVOLUTIONOFCRICKET

Introduction of Cricket in India

• The entire history of cricket in India and the sub-continent as a whole is based on the existence and development of the East India Company.

• In 1639, the Company effectively founded the city of Madras, and in 1661 acquired Portuguese territory on the west coast of India that included Bombay. All of these places became major cricket centres as the popularity of the game grew among the native population.

• The first definite reference to cricket being played anywhere in the sub-continent is a report of English sailors of the East India Company written in 1737. It refers to cricket being played at Cambay, near Baroda in 1721.

The records show that the first ever cricket match in India was played in 1721 AD. Initially accepted by the Parsi community, this game of foreigners began to appear in organized form with the establishment of the 'Oriental Cricket Club' in 1848.This cricket club of Mumbai marked the beginning of interest of Indian people in cricket. The first official cricket match was played between Parsis and Europeans in 1877 AD. Till late 19th century people of this country did not open their hearts to the game. The popularity of the game started building up among the Indian people when some of the Indians started playing cricket for English cricket team in 1900s.

DEVLOPMENT OF CRICKET IN INDIA

• Events such as the advent of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 competition have had a huge social impact, injecting new life and new money into Indian ( and world)  cricket, changing the way many Indians spend their evenings, for at least 50 nights of the year.

• The country’s growing affluence and developing middle class, along with introduction of TV into millions of households has changed the game.

Helmets and other protective equipment have become available so batsman can play all shots and not have to fear for their lives if they misjudge the hook or pull shot.

• 50 over cricket and 20 over cricket are being played.

The maximum allowed legal balls in an over is now 6 where as in years past it was 8 ball overs.

The pay that cricketers get now means they can play cricket for a living where as in years past hardly any could rely just on the money from cricket to support the family.

IPL has not only drawn “live” audience; it has attracted a vastly increased television audience. IPL has regularly surpassed all television shows, often claiming top billing in terms of ratings.

Commerce, media and cricket today• The popularity of cricket increased in leaps

and bounds. • Five day test matches gave way to one-

day international matches and today we have Twenty 20 series.

Cricket Dress Code• In test matches the players wear ‘white’.• For one-day international games the

players wear colored-track suits. Each country is allotted one color. The Indians wear blue colored suits and hence are called ‘men in blue’.

Cricket and TelevisionThe game was first televised by Kerry Packer,

an Australian television business man. This concept of broadcasting cricket matches

live on TV soon became very popular. The Commercial value of cricket increased as

many companies sponsored the game. The game was very popular and had millions of viewers from all over the world.

Cricketers were asked to sponsor products and cricket has become a money spinning game today.

Cricket and the changing techniques• Changes were devised in bowling
