NicoleTopich(https://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/radcliffe-institute-staff-directory)https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/antislaverypetitionsmaTheDigitalArchiveofMassachusettsAnti-SlaveryandAnti-SegregationPetitionsconsistsof3,500legislativedocumentsfromthestatearchivesthatwerecatalogedanddigitizedthroughaNationalEndowmentfortheHumanitiesgrantunderHarvardUniversityProfessorDanielCarpenter.ThesedocumentsweresenttotheMassachusettsstategovernmentfromtheyears1649to1870andincludealmost282,000signatures,ofwhichatleast81,500signaturesarefromwomen.

Thiscollaborationhasallowedmanyhiddencollectionstoberevealed,includingdocumentationofblackandNativeAmericanactivismandevidenceoforganizing,canvassing,andotherformsofpoliticalparticipationandinteractionswiththegovernment,notonlyfromlegalvoters,butalsominorsandwomen.Thesedocumentsandextensivemetadataallowuserstoexploreperspectivesacrossclass,race,gender,space,andtimeformanypeoplewhohavebeentraditionallylessstudiedanddocumented.Inadditiontomass-petitioningefforts,extensivedetailsandtextaresometimesprovidedwithinthepetitions.Anewmappinginterfaceandadditionaldocumentsonanti-discriminationeffortsintothe20thcenturywillalsobediscussed.

EchoesofthePast:Bringinghistoricalrole-playingtothestreetsofBoston

“EchoesofthePast,”stagedinBostonlastyearaspartoftheanniversaryoftheStampActprotests,putrealhistoricalcharactersonBostonstreetsandchallengedparticipantstofindthemandpiecetogetherastory.Itwasanewtypeoflivinghistoryevent—a“game”thatbrokedownbarriersandengagedaudienceswithchallenges,mysteryandrole-play.

Asalifelonghistorybuff,ittookmealongtimetounderstandwhytherearesomanypeoplewhoviewhistoryasa“boring”subject.Howcouldthestoryofhumanexperienceacrossallcontinentsandagesbeboring?Iamconvincedthatthedifferencebetweenahistoryloverandeveryoneelseisthesparkofengagementthatconvincesthemoftheeffortofstudyingandcarefullyreconstructingthepastintheirimagination.Butgettingengagementiseasiersaidthandone.Westruggleagainststereotypesofhistoryandhistorians,badpreviousexperiences(ofteninaclassroom),emotionaldistanceandthedifficultyofmakingoursubjectsrelevanttoouraudience.Designingandproducing“EchoesofthePast”onatightbudgetwasafascinatingexperiment.Regardlessofyourtypeofhistoricbuildingorsite,therearelessonsyoucantakeawayandapply.

TravisRoland,Docent–http://museumofworldwarii.orgAlthoughtheMuseumofWWIIinNatickmaynotyetbewell-knownlocally,itisheldinveryhighregardinternationally.London’sImperialWarMuseumdescribeditas“containingthemostcomprehensivedisplayoforiginalWorldWarIIartifactsonexhibitanywhereintheworld.”Collectedovermorethan50yearsbyKenRendell,adealerinautographs,lettersandmanuscripts,theMuseum’s8,000artifactsand500,000documentsandphotographsshowindetailtheeventsofthewar,fromthesigningoftheVersaillesTreaty,whichendedWorldWarI,totheNurembergandTokyowarcrimestrialsthatbroughtthewartoaclose.Housedinanon-descriptbuildingandopenbyappointmentonly,themuseumisundergoingatransformationwiththeadditionofstaffandplansforamajorexpansionthatwillcreateamuchmorepublicinstitution.Inadditiontothisjourney,Traviswilldiscusssomeoftheremarkableitemsinthecollection,includinganewacquisitionofRudolfHess’spersonalarchives.

LiseBreen(lbreen@billbreen.net)isanindependentresearcherfromGloucester.Sheisdevelopingatrailthatfocusesonthehistoryofslaveryandanti-slaveryonCapeAnn.TheSargentHouseMuseumadvertisesitsGloucestermansionasthehomeof“seacaptains,merchants,patriotsandcommunityleaders.”Forthepastfewyears,inanefforttoincreaseinterest,thestrugglingHousehasfocusedonJudithSargentMurray’slegacyasabrilliant,earlyadvocateforwomen.Butthereareotheraccountsthatcouldbetold.

Here,IexplainthatJudithSargent(Murray)–andherGloucesterrelatives–ownedslaves.Icommentonherplay,TheAfrican,andreviewsomeofherfewremarksaboutslavery.IdiscussherMississippirelatives’slaveownershipandconnectthemtotheNatchezfurnitureandportraitsondisplay.Then,IshowthatasubsequentHouseinhabitant–whoseportraitsaredisplayed–istheownerof1840sslaveships.DoesitbehoovetheSargentHousetocomplicateitsstoryoftheambitiouswriterwhoproclaimedwomen’sinherentequality?WilltenuoussupportfortheHouseevaporateoncetheHouserevealsthatits“gentlemenplanters,”shipcaptains,churchleaders,andmerchantskeptslavesorengagedintheslavetrade?DoestheHousehaveanobligationtothehistoricalrecordandtothepublictoreframeitsnarrative?

JeannePickering(j_pickering@salemstate.edu),Graduatestudent,History,SalemStateUniversityIntheeighteenthcentury,Topsfieldwasasmallinlandruraltown25milesnorthofSalem.Althoughfewinnumber,enslavedindividualsandfamilieslivedtherethroughoutmuchoftheeighteenthcentury.Documentationoftheirlivesliesinfragmentedpiecesspreadacrosschurchrecords,probatedwillsandinventory,genealogicalrecordsandafewsparsearchivaldocuments.Reconstructingtheirstoriesmeansassemblingthesepieces,muchlikeassemblingajigsawpuzzleusingonlyafewbrokenpiecesfromotherpuzzlesandnoguidetofollow.

I’llshowthereconstructionofthestoriesofthreeenslavedfamilies,eachstrugglingthroughthedeathofahouseholdpatriarchtokeepthefamilytogether,onlyoneofwhommanagedtosurvivethroughthewaningdaysoflegalizedslaveryinMassachusetts.
