This is how time bank – Naapuriapu HOAS Kamppi – was established in spring 2011

HOW DOES TIME BANKING WORK?

Naapuriapu members exchange services using time credit system. Reciprocity is based on voluntary contribution and trust among the community. 1.Everyone's time and contribution is valued equally. One hour of helping a neighbour is one time credit – no matter what it is or who does it.2.Members have their time credit accounts. It’s ok to be in minus. 3.Time credit system allows generalized reciprocity. This way neighbour help doesn’t have to be between two people. It can also be “pay it forward”.4.Is this tax avoidance? No it’s not, don’t worry!

Iikka Antti

They sent invitation letters to every household in Kamppi and went to lenkkisauna to convince others that they are not lunatics.

Pay it forward

1. Gytenis carries furniture with Antti

2. Antti helps Maria to Fix her bike

3. Maria pays it forward and does window washing with an other neighbour

When members do admin work or exchange services they inform the time booker on how much time they spent. Booker tracks time credits in Google docs and replies members their balance.

Gatherings are important! That’s where good ideas come up and where trust and community are built. That is why members earn one time credit just by attending the meetings. In this case time credits are transferred from community account to private accounts. This is also a way to show in numbers to HOAS office how tenants contribute for better living. Basically, everything that brings people together is good!

When neighbours get to know each other...

…they begin to trust each other

…and feel confident to lend stuff like window opener, plates for dinner party, or give their sauna turn when they are not using it themselves!

When there is trust and socializing – there are innovations
