Withatotalofonekilometreofcablestozipalong,HollybankTreetopsAdventureislikeonegiantflyingfox.Thecablesrangeinlength:from10metresto400metres,withthehighestonehoveringacool50metresabovetheground!

Launchingplatforms,called'cloudstations',arebuiltaroundthetrunksoflargetrees,withinthemidcanopyleveloftheforest–withsomeashighas30mabovetheforestfloor.

Thescariestpartistakingyourfirststepofftheedge–inyourharnessofcourse–butstill,whenyoulookdown,theforestfloorseemstobealongwayaway.

1. Youcan,forexample,grabaSegwayandgoona2-hourguidedtour,zoomingyourwayaroundtheforesttracks,whilelearningaboutthehistoryandsightsintheforest.

2. Oryoumightprefertohoponamountainbikeandziparoundtheforestthatway.Theforesthas20kilometresofmountainbiketrailswithshortandlongloops.Therearegreentrailsforbeginners,bluetrailsforintermdiates,andevensomeblacktracksforveryexperiencedriders.

3. Butifyoudon’tfeellikemovingandjustfeellikesittingunderatreeandeating,therearealsosomeverybeautifulpicnicareas…

Activity 3 – A Brief History of Hollybank Forest...

YoucanfindtheHollybankforestinnorth-easternTasmania,around21kilometresfromthecentreofLaunceston.Theforestcoversanareaof140hectaresandisnowmanagedbyForestryTasmaniaasarecreationalreserve.

Butbackinthe1850s,theforestfirstbelongedtotwoEuropeansettlers:WilliamTyson,acarpenter,andWilliamDawsonGrubb,alawyer.

WhatdidTysonandGrubbdowiththeforest?

Atthetime,therewasabigdemandfortimberinAustraliabecauseoftheVictoriangoldrush.SoTysonandGrubbbuiltawater-poweredsawmillonthebanksofthenearbyPipersriver.TysonandGrubb’stimbermillwasthefirstpower-drivenmillinnorthernTasmania.Theychoppeddownalargeareaofnativegumtreesasasourceoffinetimberandreplantedthosetreeswithpines.

Whoworkedinthemill?

Thefreesettlerslistfor1854showsJamesCrabtree,hiswifeEllen,hisuncleWilliamCrabtreeandwife,Jane,arrivedin‘VanDiemen’sLand’(whatwenowknowasTasmania)ontheshipcalled‘Juno’fromEngland.Bothmenwere‘millsawyermen’andWilliamCrabtreewouldbecomethefirstmillmanager.TheCrabtreesbroughttheAmericanmachineryforGrubbandTyson’smillontheshipwiththem,alongwith20workmen.

Howdidtheytransportthetimberlogs?

Themillprosperedandin1855GrubbandTysonbuilta‘horsedrawntramway’13kilometreslongfromPipersRivertoMowbray,anearbytown.Thewoodentrackhassincedisappearedbutevidencecanstillbeseenofthetramwayandthestonewalls.Thetramtookthetimbertomarketandbroughtbacksuppliesformillworkersandsettlersinthearea.

Ashtrees

Muchlater,inthe1930s,ashtreeswereplantedtosupplywoodtocreatecricketbatsandtennisracquets!Sonowadays,Hollybankforestismadeupofnativeandintroducedtrees:amixtureofnativebush,ashandpineplantations.
