Advent :
According to the teachings of the Catholic Church, Advent
means three things:
(1) It means to prepare ourselves to be worthy of celebrat-
ing the Christmas anniversary of the Lord's coming into the
world as the incarnate God of love.
(2) It means that through the Sacrament of Holy Commun-
ion and through grace, we are to prepare our souls as fitting
abodes for the coming of the Redeemer.
(3) It means to prepare ourselves
for the final coming of the Lord as
our Judge, either at death or at
the end of the world, whichever
may come first.
Advent : Give until it hurts.”
How do we prepare ourselves wor-
thily for the birthday celebration of
Jesus? For some, one has to go to a
retreat; for some is to pray more, try to be kinder to those
around us. See for example, giving gifts or cards on Christmas.
All of these are good but lucking. For me, the best preparation
that we should do with our lives during this season and the days
to come throughout the year is what Mother Theresa of Calcutta
had said: “”Give until it hurts.” There is a story of giving until it
hurts in the gospel of St. Mark (12:38-42) where Jesus praised
the poor widow who put two copper coins in the collection box
for the poor in the temple. Christ told His disciples that the poor
widow had given more than all the rich people who put large
amount of money in the collection and yet it was surplus. “They
give of their surplus,” as Jesus said, “but she gave all she had.”
She gives until it hurts. All of us are like the poor widow. None
of us are exempted. We can give until it hurts.Of course, Jesus
is the perfect example of giving until it hurts. He didn’t just talk
about giving everything. He did it. He gave everything he had
even to death on the cross. Christ always gives until it hurts. We
are good people. We do give. Sometimes we give a lot to show
that we are generous and charitable. But we rarely give until it
hurts. If we want to be really good, we have to learn to really
give. We cannot just give what is extra. We have to give up
something we think is important to us and yet others need it all
the more.
Lady of Guadalupe Celebration
The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron Saint of Mexico . Accord-
ing to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous man
named Juan Diego on Dec. 9, 1531. The Virgin asked that a
shrine in her name be built on the spot where she appeared,
Tepeyac Hill, which is now in a suburb of Mexico City. Juan Die-
go told the bishop about the apparition and request, but he didn’t
believe him and demanded a sign before he would approve con-
struction of the church. On Dec. 12, the Virgib reappeared to
Juan Diego and ordered him to collect roses in his tilmátli, a kind
of cloak. Juan took the roses to the bishop and when he opened
his cloak, dozens of roses fell to the floor and revealed the im-
age of the Virgen of Guadalupe imprinted on the inside. The
tilmátli with the image is on display in the Basilica de Guada-
lupe . The day of the Virgen de Guadalupe became a national
holiday in Mexico in 1859. Thousands gather each year on Dec.
12 at Mexico City’s Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe to cele-
brate the patron saint’s birthday. Over 800,000 people gather
around the Basilica and bring
candles and offerings to honor
her. They also sing the famed
“Las Mañanitas.”Her image has
been used throughout Mexican
history, not only as a religious
icon but also as a sign of patri-
otism.
A few highlights ·
December 24 is the 4th Sunday of Advent. There is an obliga-
tion for people to attend Mass either Sat (Dec. 23) or Sunday
(Dec. 24). Masses for Christmas Eve may be celebrated after
4:00 pm. You may want to consider minimizing Christmas dec-
orations until after the last Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent –
at the very least, keeping lights off on Christmas decora-
tions. Please consider: How will the environment be different
for those attending Mass for Christmas than it was on the
There will not be a 4pm Mass
on Saturday December 9 at
Holy Redeemer because they
will be celebrating Our Lady
of Guadalupe beginning at
5pm. Everyone is invited to
join the Hispanics in their
celebration. We start with Mass at 5pm and follow with Mari-
achis, food,...Don’t miss the opportunity to know a little more
about Hispanic customs.
Holy Day of obligation
December 8th : Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass at Holy Redeemer at 8:00am. The
Catechism of the Catholic Church says : Mary was invited to
conceive Jesus in whom the "whole fullness of deity" would
dwell "bodily". The divine response to her question, "How can
this be, since I know not man?", was given by the power of the
Spirit: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you." The mission of the
Holy Spirit is always conjoined and ordered to that of the Son.
The Holy Spirit, "the Lord, the giver of Life", is sent to sanctify
the womb of the Virgin Mary and divinely fecundate it, causing
her to conceive the eternal Son of the Father in a humanity
drawn from her own.
