AmericAn ingenuity Aswereadoftheimpendingstatebudgetcuts,therisingunemploymentrateandotherdismalnews,Iwouldliketotakeamomenttosalutefolksthatlookforwaystosolveproblemsusingtheirowntimeandtalentsinsteadofmerelybemoaningsomeofthelife’slessermoments.“Americaningenuity”isdefinedasbeingresourcefulandinnovative.OneofourneighborsintheWilliamsonCountyareaisanexcellentexampleofAmericaningenuity.TracyLaPorteisabusinessowner,momandfounderof“MilitaryMomsofTexas(MMOT).”Whenherson,Adam,wasdeployedtoIraqaboutayearago,shelookedaroundforagroupofothermilitaryfamiliesforsupportandfoundnoneinourareathatmetherneeds.So,insteadoflookingforthegovernmentorotherstostartandfundaprogram,shestartedoneherself.Sincethattime,MMOThasbeen involved inavarietyofactivities including sendingcarepackagestothedeployedtroops,havingsupportgroupmeetings,takingsoldierswithouttransportationtoandfromtheairport,manningboothsatvariouslocaleventsandmore.OneofthemostmovingthingsTracyorganizedwasaneighborhoodparadetowelcomehomealocalMarinewhowasreturningtoourareabrieflyaftertwotoursinIraq,beforeheleftforhisthirdtour.TracymanagedtoturnouthundredsoffolkstolinethestreetwithAmericanflagsandhomemadesignstolethimandhisfamilyknowthatweappreciatehisandtheirsacrifice.Shedidallofthiswhilealsoworkingandraisingherotherchildren,oneofwhomisatoddler.Currently,sheisorganizingacarepackagedrivetosendtodeployedsoldiers.Sheisinurgentneedofcashtoshipthepackages.MoreinformationincludingspecificitemsneededisavailableontheMMOT’swebsite,www.militarymomsoftexas.com.Ifyoucanhelp,pleasedoso. OnMay7thIattendedan8hourseminaraboutOakWiltdisease.dr.davidAppel,fromTexasA&MandJimHouser,oftheTexasForest Service, shared their knowledge and experience dealingwiththisfastspreadingdisease.Itsepicenterisjustuptheroad,inLibertyHill,buttreeshavealreadydiedofOakWilttothenorthandsouthofAveryranch.It’sonlyamatteroftimebeforeithitsourneighborhood.

Themessageisurgent.Oaktreesofmanyvarieties,especiallyliveoaksandthoseintheredoakfamily,aredyingfromexposuretotheoakwiltfungus.Thebesthopewehave,ifwewantthesegrandoakstosurvive,istorecognizethesymptomsandlearnhowtoprotectourtreesfrombecomingcontaminated.

OnewaytheOakWiltfungusisspreadisbynitidulidbeetlesthatfeedonfungalmatsunderthebarkofinfectedredoaktrees.Sporesofthefungusarecarriedbythesebeetlesfromoneoaktreetoanother.Thesetinybeetlesareonly1/8inchlong;theymightbedismissedasagnattheyaresohardtosee.Theyareattractedtofreshlycutwood,zeroinginonthesmellofthesap.Theylandonthewoundtofeed,introducingthesporesoftheoakwiltfungustothetree.That’sallittakesforyourtreetobecontaminated.Thesporesmultiplyinthexylem,whichservesaspartofthetree’svascularsystem,cloggingthe“arteries”.Liveoakscandiewithin6monthsandredoakscan

bedeadinonly4weeks!Oakwilt fungus, ceratocystis fagacearum, is a vasculardisease,

unlikeothertreediseases.Themostnoticeablesymptomisleavesthatbeginbrowningoutwhenit’snottheseasonforthemtobeturningbrown.Leavesonliveoakslookdiseasedalongtheveins,whileleavesontreesintheredoakfamilyappeartobehalfbrown,halfgreen,untiltheyturncompletelybrown.

Theotherwaythatoakwilt fungusspreadsisbyundergroundrootsthatconnectwithinamottofoaktrees.Thesesharedrootshelpsustainoaktreesthroughdroughtsbysharingfoodandwater,buttragically,onceonetreegetstheoakwiltdisease,theyarealsothemeansbywhichmanyofthemdie.Thisiswhy4footdeeptrenchesaresometimescutbetweenoaktreestoseverrootsthatconnectthem,inhopesofisolatingdiseasedtreesandprotectinghealthyones.Thismethodisn’talwayspractical,butwherelandisavailable,itcanbeagoodsolution.

TheotherapproachistotreathealthytreesthatarewithincloserangeofcontaminatedtreeswithaproductcalledAlamo,aliquidfungicide. It’s used in dilution with water in proportion to thediameterofthetree.

Following the lecture, the master gardeners and professionalarborists in the class drove over to a georgetown neighborhoodwhere a tree that was in imminent danger had been identified.ThehomeownersuremusthavebeensurprisedwhentwoAggieprofessorsshowedupattheirdoorofferingtotreattheirtree!Theylikelydidn’tevenrealizeitwasinjeopardy,butacrossthestreetonetreewasdyingandhalfwaydowntheblockanotherwasalreadydeadofOakWilt.

Itwasfascinatingwatchingthemacro-infusiontreatmentofthisliveoakwithAlamo.Anarboristhadcomeoutthedaybeforeandblownoutthesoilaboutafootdowntoexposetherootflares,sothetreewasallreadyfordr.AppeltodrillholesandinserttheplasticT-connectors and tubing.We gathered around watching severalgallonsoftheblueliquidabsorbintotherootswithinaboutanhour.Withanyluck,thattreewillsurvive,thoughthereisstillmuchtobelearnedabouttheeffectivetreatmentoftrees.Thisisn’ta100%cureandtherearenoguarantees.

What’s the message you should tell your friends about oak Wilt disease?

1. don’t even think about trimming an Oak tree of any varietybetweenFebruaryandJuneasthesearethecooler,moistmonths

whenthenitidulidbeetleismostactive.LiveOaksandredOaksaremostsusceptible,butothervarietieshavebeenknowntodieofOakWiltdisease.

2.Beforepruningyourtree,sterilizeyoursaworclipperswithspray-onLysol.Sterilizetoolsbetweenpruningtrees.Avoidusingbleachsinceitcorrodesmetaltools.

3.Paintthewoundorpruningcutimmediately!...don’tWait!Anykindofpaintwillwork.Thesmellofthepaintdisguisesthesmellofthesapsonitidulidbeetleswon’tbedrawntoyourtree.After2-3days,itistoolatetopaint.Bythistimethetreecouldalreadybeinfectedoritwillnolongersmelltoattractbeetles.Sopaintimmediatelyasyoucut!

4.Keepyourtreeshealthybywateringweeklyusingasoakerhoseatthedripline,andfertilizingthemSpringandFall.ThoughthisisnotknowntobetheultimateprotectionfromOakWiltdisease,itmayhelp.
