The CR-Z was developed based on Honda’s passion to broaden the potential for a hybrid vehicle. The model offers three core values: Emotional (emotional look and feel), Exciting (make people want to enjoy driving) and Smart (environmentally responsible, useful and liberating). Combining nimble, sporty driving with outstanding fuel economy of 25 km/L,2 the CR-Z offers a completely new kind of value as a hybrid vehicle and has won fans in a wide range of cus-tomer segments. As the world’s first sporty hybrid, it’s stylish looks stand-out from other ‘green’ cars on the market and it offers true driving thrills thanks to a well sorted chassis, direct steering, a low driving position and useful boosts of torque from the petrol electric.

One of the CR-Z’s more unique features is its three-mode drive system. This allows the driver to tailor the driving experience to actual condi-tions or personal preference. Some drivers may prefer to conserve fuel at all times. Some drivers may prefer to have all of the CR-Z’s power on tap at all times, while other drivers may prefer to have a combination of the two but with the option to pick either, depending on the situation. The “3-mode” hybrid drive system allows for more individualized vehicle performance preferences with the Sport, Normal and Econ modes. In Sport Mode the capabilities include increasing the IMA power delivery curve at lower RPM and electronically recalibrating steering effort for an enhanced performance feel. Sport mode best represents the dynamically sporty aspect of driving the CR-Z. Alter-natively and for increased efficiency, the Econ mode can work with the driver to “smooth” throttle inputs, reduce the air conditioning system’s impact on fuel consumption and potentially activate idle stop sooner when coming to a stop, which is particularly beneficial during stop-and-go city driving. Normal mode provides a balance between Sport and Econ modes, and is a good option for any driv-ing situation. Overall, the CR-Z is designed to encourage elevated efficiency while also providing agile and engaging performance previously unavailable in a hybrid vehicle.

12 _ Under the bonnet, is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that’s new to the market. Euro 5 compliant, this eager-to-rev engine produces 114PS of power at 6,100rpm and torque of 145Nm at 4,800rpm. The electric motor is positioned between the engine and gearbox and produces power of 14PS and boosts torque by 78.4Nm – both of which come much lower down the rev range between 1,000 and 1,500rpm. This ‘low down torque’ improves initial acceleration and means the CR-Z bursts into action almost immediately perfect for stop-start driving in built up areas. Together the petrol engine and electric motor generate an overall power output of 124PS at 6,100rpm and 174Nm of torque between 1000-1,500rpm. This is equivalent to the peak torque of a 1.8-litre Civic. The torque curve of the new hybrid is unusually flat for a naturally aspirated engine, with the peak arriving at just 1,500 rpm, enabling great flexibility at all engine speeds. INCREASE EFFICIENCY.

We first designed the frame in Japan. Then we polished the clay model in Germany. We chose Germany because there more men and women and people of all ages are out driving compact cars on the highway and in town just like sports cars. Using Honda’s unique approach, we designed the CR-Z with an exterior design that would get attention and make the driver look simply great and a compact form that would allow for convenient, carefree driving. In Europe, the average driving speed is quite high, and the waythe light reflects and the air moves is just different than in Japan. These things alter our perception of the design, and the change in environment gave us a new vision for creating just the right surfaces. The designers and modelers proceeded through trial and error,trying out many possibilities. In time, we created an advanced wedge form that seems to speed along like a bullet—a sensual kind of shape that practically demands one to walk up and touch it. This design has a sense of streamlined speed and beauty that wouldn’t be possible in a larger automobile. We first designed the frame in Japan. Then we polished the clay model in Germany. 20 _ For those who remember the Honda CRX from the 1980s, the two cars share an obvious resemblance with shallow raked roofline, truncated rear, split level rear glass hatch and aerodynamic styling. But the CR-Z is the 21st century rethinking of this car, with cleaner tailpipe emissions, great fuel economy and an exciting drive. The exterior design of CR-Z deliberately evokes the iconic style of the 1980s CRX, which was originally developed to provide a small, stylish car that could achieve spectacular economy. The signature features of the CRX, like the split level rear glass hatch and low shallow raked roofline have been referenced in the design of the sleek coupe and then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted exterior form. The shallow raked roofline and sharply truncated tail of the CR-Z is a key Honda design feature shared with many models past and present. The exterior design of CR-Z deliberately evokes the iconic style of the 1980s and 1990s Honda CRX, which was originally developed to provide a small, stylish car that could achieve excel-lent fuel economy. Signature features of the CRX, the split-level rear glass hatch of the second generation model and the low, shallow raked roofline have been referenced in the design the sleek coupe and then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted.

Honda introduced the Civic CRX. Light and nimble, the CRX quickly established itself within the enthusi-ast community. The combination of its high quality and excellent driving dynamics led Motor Trend to name the 1984 CRX as its Import Car of the Year.

del Sol 1993

The targa-topped 2-seat del Sol was first introduced to North America in 1993. A small, front-engine car, the del Sol continued where the CRX left off. 1994 saw the introduction of the del Sol Si featuring VTEC® Honda’s trademark engine the valve-timing system, giving it 160 hp and turning it into a rocket.

Insight 1999

The original Honda Insight2-seat coupe, introduced in late 1999, broke new ground as the firstgasoline electric hybrid car soldin America. Aerodynamic andinnovative, the Insight redefinedthe way the industry thoughtabout fuel-efficient vehicles.

SHORT SHIFTS _ The CR-Z is the first hybrid ever to have a sporty, the 6-speed manual gearbox and has been developed with the enthusiastic driver in mind. Short shifts and a firm but light action makes for a more involv-ing drive. The manual ‘box allows the driver greater control over the CR-Z’s torquey, natu-rally aspirated 1.5-litre engine and provides the correct balance between driver enjoyment and fuel economy.

SHARP AND RESPONSIVE _ The engineers wanted to create a stiff body unit to ensure the CR-Z’s handling was as sharp and responsive as its styling suggests. The result of these stiffen-ing efforts is a torsional rigidity similar to that of the Civic Type R.

THROATY EXHAUST _ The CR-Z team hasdedicated a great deal of time and thought to the design of the exhaust to give it a sporty note, quite unlike any previous compact hybrid. It also had to be an efficient unit that allowed optimum engine operation, minimised emis-sions and generated the target power level.

36 _ Advanced Compatibility Engineering Body Structure The 2011 CR-Z features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces trans-ferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. Addition-ally, ACE helps minimize the potential for under-ride or over-ride situations that can happen during head-on or offset frontal impacts with a significantly larger or smaller vehicle. Unlike most conven-tional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing structures in the front end, the ACE system actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Design Structures in the front of the 2011 CR-Z are designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that certain design features can dramatically improve a pedestrian’s chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle. 42 _ When a person gets in the driver’s seat of the CR-Z, they will im-mediately notices the low driving position. In combination with the easy-to-handle, small-diameter steering wheel and the pedals with their sporty positions, this posture creates excitement and makes the driver want to start driving immediately. When the driver takes off, the superior functionality of the futuristic silver bucket seat becomes apparent. Two phases of support on the sides grip the driver during cornering, while the 3D structure gives plenty of elbow room for smooth shifting. Even new drivers will immediately appreciate the support and superior shifting functionality that keep them relaxed and ready for the enjoyable driving.
