Types of stainless steel

STAINLESS STEEL 310

• Fe-Cr-Ni base system • Nickel is added to stabilize austenite which highly increases

the general resistance to corrosive environments. • High chromium content gives excellent corrosion resistance

to stainless steel. • Ferrite-stabilizing elements are chromium, molybdenum,

silicon and niobium• Austenite-stabilizing elements are nickel, manganese, carbon

and nitrogen.

Creep • Creep is plastic deformation that takes place at constant load when

the material is exposed at high temperatures for longer times, even if the stresses are less than the yield strength.

Importance of Stainless steel

Development of high temperature materials with improved creep rupture strength and oxidation resistance is critically needed. Materials for these demanding conditions are austenitic stainless steels such as 310, 310NbN and Sanicro 25.

Chemical composition of the 310 austenitic steel

Strengthening mechanism• Good creep resistance can be achieved by dispersion of secondary

phases like nitrides and carbides through precipitation hardening. So the addition of strong carbide/nitride formers such as Ti, Nb, V.

• Solid solution strengthening achieved by alloying of dissolved atoms is one of the important strengthening mechanisms in austenitic stainless steel.

There are two types of solid solution strengthening mechanisms i.e. • Substitutional solid solution: Substitutional solid solution involves

the solute atoms which are replacing the atoms in the crystalline lattice of the base metal

• Interstitial solid solution: Interstitial solid solution involves the solute atoms which are smaller than the solvent atoms and end up in spaces between the atoms in the lattice.

Thermo-mechanical simulation compression test : Gleeble-3500 thermal–mechanical • Constant compression strain rate and invariable temperature. Procedure:

• The specimen was heated to 1200 C with the heating rate of 10 °C s-1 and held for 10 min, then cooled to individual deformation temperatures with the cooling rate of 5 °C s-1 and held for 5 min.

• Almost all compression ratios were 50% (e = 0.68) at 0.1 s-1 , 1 s-1 and 10 s-1 strain rates.

• After compression, the specimens were quenched into water directly.

Experimental condition

Serrated feature of flow curves can be attributed to a competition between DRX and SIP.

Fig. 3(a) denotes the deformation of the tested steel at lower temperature. Some grains are elongated along the deformation direction and become pancaked grains.

Conclusions(1) Coarsened precipitates at HAGBs strongly affected the occurrence of DRX. They not only promoted the nucleation but also prohibited the growth of the DRX grains.(2) Temperature and strain rate affected the process of DRX. Higher temperature and higher strain rate were favoured for the occurrence of DRX.(3) LAGBs decreased while HAGBs slowly increased with an increase of temperatures, consequently twin GBs and random HAGBs increased after deformed at higher temperatures.(4) At high temperature and high strain rate, the true stress–strain curves exhibited tiny serrations effects due to the interaction of the DRX and precipitation. (5) At the initial stage of DRX, the LAGB and twin GBs fraction changed greatly, and the stress dropped abruptly.

Results and discussionGBs were divided into three groups: random HAGBs (misorientations greater than 15, shown as black lines), twin boundaries (misorientation of 60 about a 111 axis with angular tolerance of 0.5, shown as green lines), and low misorientations (blue and red lines), which are some substructures, including sub-grain boundaries, dislocation walls or in a general way with dislocation density.
