Guided Reading

• For the student, the guided reading lesson means reading and talking (and sometimes writing) about an interesting and engaging variety of fiction and nonfiction texts.

• For the teacher, guided reading means taking the opportunity for careful text selection and intentional and intensive teaching of systems of strategic activity for proficient reading (Fountas & Pinnell, 1996).

Purpose of the Level Chinese assessment• To determine student’s instructional levels

• To determine student’s placement levels for guided reading groups

• To show student growth over time

• To select appropriate reading material for students

• To provide data for teachers when making critical decisions about student instruction and intervention

• To provide valuable information to parents and students

Based on our students' assessments, we take the skills and strategies all of our students need and map them out on what we call a curriculum calendar . These strategies become what we teach during our whole-group lessons.

Daily Class Structure (Literacy Block 90 minutes Daily)

Time Period Activities

15 Minutes Daily Routine (calendar, weather, schedule), Morning Meeting

15 Minutes Big group mini-lesson (Read aloud, shared reading) to teach Level Chinese objectives including reading strategies and language objectives.

20 Minutes x 3 Rotations

Teacher teaches Guided Reading to small groups using LC books while other students are doing Daily 5 independently (read to self, read to partner, work on writing, word work, listen to reading)
